MOON ALERT: Avoid shopping or important decisions from 9:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. today. After that, the moon moves from Scorpio into Sagittarius.

ARIES (March 21-April 19)

Because of the moon alert, it’s a poor day for financial decisions and major purchases. Nevertheless, this is a fun-loving, playful day. Enjoy a long lunch with someone. Book off early. Enjoy the arts or get involved in creative projects because you are in touch with your muse today.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20)

Heed the restrictions of the moon alert (see above). However, this is a fabulous day to entertain at home. Invite the gang over for good food and drink. If you are exploring real estate opportunities, wait until the moon alert is over before you act.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20)

You will enjoy talking to siblings, relatives and neighbours because everyone is in a good mood. You will feel loved by all. Nevertheless, heed the restrictions of the moon alert. Restrict spending during the alert to food, gas and entertainment.

CANCER (June 21-July 22)

This is a tricky day. It’s a wonderful day for business and commerce and making a profit. However, during the actual time of the moon alert, do not agree to anything important or sign important papers. Just get your information and data then wait.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22)

Today you feel contented and keen to socialize with others. While the planetary aspects today are traditionally good for financial matters, do not do anything important during the moon alert. During this time, restrict your spending to food, gas and entertainment.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)

Today you are pleased with yourself as well as others. You’re glad to be alive and life feels good. However, most of this day is a moon alert, which is wonderful for socializing and creative activities — but poor for shopping and business. (See above.)

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)

This is a fabulous day to schmooze with friends or interact with clubs, groups and organizations because the vibes are great. People are energetic, enthusiastic and happy to see you. Note: If you get involved, don’t volunteer for anything or agree to anything important during the moon alert. (See above.)

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)

You make a fabulous impression on bosses, parents and VIPs today, which is why they might approach you with an offer. Do not accept during the moon alert. (See above.) Don’t volunteer for anything during that time. Once it is over — act quickly.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)

You will enjoy partying, travelling with friends and exploring new ideas today because it’s a friendly, upbeat day. However, because most of this day is a moon alert, it’s a poor day for important decisions or purchases. (Check moon alert above.)

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)

Don’t make important financial decisions during the moon alert (see above). Having said that, this is an excellent day to benefit from the wealth of others. Keep your pockets open! Once the moon alert is over, grab your winnings.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)

Everyone around you will be in good spirits today, which is why this is a lovely day to enjoy social occasions, amusements and entertainment. It’s a romantic day as well! In addition to good times with friends and partners, you will also enjoy relating to groups.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20)

This is a positive day at work for you because you will get along with co-workers and customers because everyone is upbeat and happy. It’s possible to boost your earnings and explore new projects. However, do not make important decisions during the moon alert. Restrict your spending during that time to food, gas and entertainment.

TODAY’S BIRTHDAY

Tennis champ/philanthropist Roger Federer (1981) shares your birthday today. You are responsible and realistic. You are also kind, considerate and generous. You are workaholic striving for perfection. Now is the time to clarify future goals because you are entering a year of exciting changes and new beginnings. Start to define what you want for yourself in the next several years. Be pro-active. This year, you will feel physically energetic.

Menstruation, consent move up in sex-ed lesson plan

Maggie Macintosh 4 minute read 6:00 AM CDT

Manitoba’s newest curriculum introduces the menstrual cycle earlier and repeatedly calls for explicit lessons on how students can give, seek, and decline to provide their consent.

The education department has released its sweeping proposal to overhaul how exercise, nutrition and sexuality are taught between kindergarten and Grade 12.

Grade 5 has long served as a key turning point for “the talk,” said J Fiedler, a sexual and reproductive health educator who provided input on the new curriculum.

“There’s no ‘the talk’ anymore. Now, there’s continuations of multiple ‘talks,’ which can hopefully reduce stress for students and stigma that people experience talking about sexuality.”

Summer success sends Brezden to the Black Sea

Laurie Nealin 5 minute read 3:35 PM CDT

Breken Brezden got off to a flying start as a new figure skating season dawned in August making the Manitoban one to watch, once again, among the sport’s elite in Canada.

The Dauphin athlete pocketed a silver medal in Montreal, then notched a win in Waterloo, outscoring a handful of Canada’s higher ranked women along the way.

In Montreal, Brezden, 20, topped the standings in the free skate portion of the competition and, with a total score of 171.03, exceeded the 166 benchmark Skate Canada set for international assignments.

“I’m quite happy with how my summer competitions went,” said Brezden, who trains in Hamilton, Ont.

Award-winning TV series North of North by Inuit filmmakers Stacey Aglok MacDonald (Qanurli, The Grizzlies) and Alethea Arnaquq-Baril (Angry Inuk, The Grizzlies) made a return to the small screen last week on APTN, CBC Gem and CBC TV with its second season première.

North of North is partnering with the Winnipeg Art Gallery-Qaumajuq to celebrate the way it has propelled authentic northern fashion into the global spotlight at the gallery’s special edition of Crafted on the Catwalk Tuesday night, featuring fashion and design from Manitoba, Nunavut, the Northwest Territories, Nunatsiavut and Nunavik.

Arnaquq-Baril and series stars Anna Lambe and Zorga Qaunaq spoke to the Free Press ahead of Tuesday’s catwalk show.

Free Press: The fashion in Season 1 set the bar so high. We’re barely into Season 2 and have already seen so many covetable, stunning looks. What story do the clothes tell the viewers?
