LOOSEY GOOSEY:

Despite being 2-5 and heading into the Lions’ den Friday, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers were an absolutely loose group at practice on Tuesday.

The relaxed atmosphere triggered this question: Is this a team that has given up and would rather goof around than work or do these players still enjoy being around one another and retain hope?

Take the latter says veteran linebacker Barrin Simpson.

"We’re at our best when we’re loose. You can’t play football when your collar is tight," said Simpson. "We need to be focused and relaxed at the same time."

Simpson said rather than tuning out coach Mike Kelly, the players are playing in his image.

"The coach likes to have fun on the field and so do we," said Simpson. "You have to have fun to be a good football team. You have to play with joy and that’s what we’re trying to do."

MORE LEFORS:

Bombers coach Mike Kelly said after Tuesday’s practice he’d like to get QB Stefan LeFors some more game action.

"I think it’s time to get him some more reps," said Kelly. "I’d like to get him in on the road where he could be relaxed. Maybe it’s a situation where Michael Bishop is in for a number of series and then Stefan goes in for a couple in the second quarter or something like that."

Kelly wouldn’t pin himself down to a situation but LeFors could very well get some work Friday in B.C.

"You asked about him so I’m telling you what I want to do," said Kelly. "I talked to Stef about it. I still think he’s a viable option for us and it’s time for him to get some more work. We’ll see when the situation presents itself. I don’t know when and where but I’d like to get him in a game soon."

Waltzing Wake

Former B.C. Lions standout Cameron Wake is looking good in his bid to make the Miami Dolphins. Wake has three tackles in the pre-season and is making plays and getting attention in Miami.

NFL.com on Wake: "The former CFL linebacker had 39 sacks in two seasons in British Columbia, and showed he’ll have no problem getting to the quarterback in the NFL… Wake still has to prove he can effectively drop back into coverage, but if he does, he’ll become a complete linebacker for the Dolphins."

The return game

Bombers coach Mike Kelly said on Tuesday that he’ll use Jovon Johnson to return punts and Fred Reid to return kicks in Friday’s game against the B.C. Lions.
