Goldeyes’ Lambson named AA Pitcher of the Year

From a reliable reliever to the best starting pitcher in the league. It’s been quite the journey for Winnipeg Goldeyes left-handed pitcher Mitchell Lambson.

The 29-year-old Montclair, Calif., native was voted the American Association’s 2019 Pitcher of the Year by the league’s field managers, general managers and media representatives.

Lambson, a third-year Goldeye who helped the team to a league title in 2017 as a reliever, made the transition to a starter in 2018. It all came together for the veteran of nine professional baseball seasons this year, as Lambson went 13-3 with a 3.03 ERA in 21 starts. Lambson headed into the final day of the regular season as the league’s leader in wins, innings pitched (150.2) and complete games (four). Lambson’s 150.2 innings also set a new Goldeyes single-season record. His ERA ranked fifth in the league, and his 133 strikeouts put him in second. In 13 of his 21 starts, Lambson held the opposition to two or fewer earned runs. Lambson owns a 56-31 career record with 10 saves and a 3.37 ERA in 275 appearances, 50 of them as a starting pitcher. Lambson was originally drafted by the Houston Astros in the 19th round in 2011, and reached the Triple-A level with three different Major League organizations — Houston, the Atlanta Braves and the Milwaukee Brewers.

The Goldeyes wrapped up their season Monday afternoon at Shaw Park, downing the Sioux Falls Canaries 9-5. The Fish missed the playoffs with a 57-43 record.
