It wasn’t what Basketball Manitoba originally had planned, but they didn’t let the COVID-19 pandemic stop them from recognizing the local hoops community.
On Saturday, Basketball Manitoba announced on their website and social media channels their long list of annual award winners. Their awards banquet was cancelled due to the virus.
Maltha Uwambajimana of Fort Richmond Collegiate was named the high school female player of the year while Vincent Massey Collegiate’s Dami Farinloye won the top male award.
For the AAAA high school coaches of the year, Fort Richmond Collegiate’s Megan Noonan took home the girls honour while Miles Macdonell Collegiate head coach Jeff Shaddock was voted as the best male coach. In the open coaching category, Scott Kirkpatrick won the male coach of the year for leading Red River College to the Manitoba Colleges Athletic Conference (MCAC) and Northern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (NIAC) championships. Joe DiCurzio and Canadian Mennonite University won the MCAC and NIAC titles in women’s hoops, leading to DiCurzio being named female team coach of the year.
The Lena Wenke Courage Award went to Matthew Marshall of Dauphin Regional School. Uwambajimana and Dakota Collegiate’s Alex Krykewich were named recipients of the Donovan Gayle Scholarship.
