Downtown Keg closes… to reopen nearby

Downtown Winnipeg is without a Keg restaurant — for a couple of months, anyways.

The Keg Steakhouse and Bar vacated 115 Garry St. on Wednesday, after more than five decades at the location. It will open in a new Donald Street apartment tower this fall.

Its move comes after years of waiting. The DSM, at 185 Donald St., sat as a partially started apartment block after its developer stopped operating and sought creditor protection in April 2023. The developer began the project in 2019.

Carrington Real Estate took over in 2024. Part of the 14-storey site’s initial plans — pre-Carrington — was for the Keg to occupy the main floor.

Wild weather uproots trees across city, leaves thousands in Manitoba without power

This summer’s latest barrage of severe thunderstorms caused widespread property damage and power outages for more than 30,000 Manitoba Hydro customers, mostly in Winnipeg, as winds of up to 133 km/h wreaked havoc.

Charleswood resident Ian Glover’s house had minor damage compared with a neighbour’s home, where a large, uprooted poplar tree crashed through the roof while the storm pummelled Winnipeg late Wednesday night and early Thursday.

“I opened the window after I woke up (around 6 a.m.) and the tree — oh my God,” Glover said. “I got my wife up and she couldn’t believe it. I was totally blown away. (Our neighbour) said the branch went right through the house into their living room.”

Glover was thankful his neighbours were not injured. Some of the tree’s outer branches clipped the corner of his home.

I made arrangements with the fire paramedic department to arrange a catered lunch for our first responders at Station No. 27 in Sage Creek. However, when I contacted the caterer to pay the bill, she insisted on paying it forward and would not accept any payment from me. A big shoutout to Tamara at Taste of Thyme Catering & Events. I do not know Tamara. She was recommended to me and I was flabbergasted by her compassion to the cause. In an effort to support local business I recommend Taste of Thyme. I went to Piazza de Nardi to use the washroom. I not only washed my hands with soap under warm water, but washed the soap bottle in soap under hot water to make sure that it was clean. When I used up all the paper wipes I let the staff on duty know that I didn’t realize that the toilet paper was not inserted into the roller just before I left.

From the bottom of my heart, I want to thank Marilena for directing me to the washroom and the staff for unplugging the toilet as I was in a rush to leave the building, while at the same time, finicky about cleanliness.

‘Good deal of synergy’ brewing in South Osborne

Pub crawls could become the next South Osborne draw.

At least, that’s the hope of entrepreneurs in the area as three breweries build out locations in the Winnipeg neighbourhood.

Nonsuch Brewing Co. and Good Neighbour Brewing Co. have opened storefronts along the strip in the past three months. Dastardly Villain is creating a taproom and nanobrewery.

“I’m really excited to have these pubs and taprooms,” said Ben Shantz, board chair of the South Osborne Business Improvement Zone.
