West End standoff turns up homicide suspect

Three men, including a suspect wanted for second-degree murder in an October homicide, were arrested during a nearly eight-hour-long standoff in Winnipeg’s West End over the weekend.

Winnipeg Police Service Const. Jay Murray told reporters Sunday that officers arrived at a house in the 600 block of McGee Street to execute a pair of entry warrants shortly after 11 a.m. Saturday.

It was believed two men who had outstanding arrest warrants were inside the residence, Murray said, adding it was later determined a homicide suspect who had been on-the-run for months was also hiding.

Terry Ryan Monkman, 37, was reportedly taken into custody without incident. Monkman faces six weapons-related charges, in addition to three outstanding arrest warrants for failing to comply with probation and attending court.

Two other men, who were thought to be armed with firearms, were uncooperative, which prompted additional officers and the force’s armoured vehicle to be deployed to the scene, Murray said, noting the individuals involved are acquaintanes and are each “very well known” to police.

“This can be a very methodical process. It can be incredibly tough to pull somebody out of a residence that you think might be armed with a firearm, is refusing to come out, and is actively hiding — in this case, it was in the attic,” he said about the lengthy standoff, during a Sunday press conference.

Jesse James Daher, 28, surrendered to police at 6:40 p.m. Ten minutes later, Dwayne Louis Simard, 37, exited the residence.

Police later seized a loaded sawed-off 12 gauge shotgun and ammunition from the residence.

Daher and Simard are both facing weapons-related charges, five and seven, respectively, in the incident, as well as outstanding arrest warrants.

Daher is facing a charge of second degree murder in the early October death of Mohamed Mohiadin Ahmed and charges related to a January incident during which he allegedly shot and seriously injured a female acquaintance with a pellet gun.

Police recovered Ahmed’s body from the Red River on Oct. 12, after an individual noticed his body near Churchill Drive and Hay Street. An investigation determined Ahmed was murdered at a residence in the Fort Garry area days earlier.

Evan Brightnose-Baker, 21, is still wanted on a Canada-wide warrant for second-degree murder in the incident. He is considered to be armed and dangerous, according to police.

Murray renewed calls to the public for help to locate Brightnose-Baker, who is described as a five-foot-five, Indigenous man who weighs approximately 126 pounds, has a medium build and brown eyes and black hair.
