Come From Away, the Canadian-produced musical that won a Tony Award and has been a hit on Broadway since 2017, returns to Winnipeg Oct. 25-30, 2022 at the Centennial Concert Hall.

Tickets go on sale to groups of 10 or more starting today by emailing Canada.Groups@BroadwayAcrossCanada.ca or by calling 1-800-889-8457. Information about single tickets will be released in the spring.

The musical by Irene Sankoff and David Hein centres on Gander, N.L., and how it welcomed 7,000 travellers from around the world on Sept. 11, 2001 after air traffic to the United States was diverted to the town in the wake of terrorist attacks on New York and Washington, D.C.

The Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre produced Come From Away in January 2018, less than a year after it opened in New York.

A more shocking style of theatre and music, namely Alice Cooper, will play the Canada Life Centre on April 9, 2022.

Tickets go on sale Friday at 10 a.m. at ticketmaster.ca, although there are various presales that begin today. Ticket prices haven’t been released.

California rockers Buckcherry are also on the bill.

Cooper, a Rock and Roll Hall of Famer who is described as the godfather of shock rock, stormed on the music scene in the early 1970s with hits such as School’s Out and I’m Eighteen. In February he released a new album, Detroit Stories, and it reached No. 1 on the Billboard album sales chart upon its release.

Wesmen women’s volleyball vets set on leading team to new heights

Joshua Frey-Sam 6 minute read 5:52 PM CDT

The Winnipeg Wesmen have taken their lumps over the last two years.

The women’s volleyball team has been the younger sister to some of Canada West’s more veteran programs while it refilled its cupboard with talent and cut its teeth.

The Wesmen are optimistic that those days are behind them, however.

The core of this squad is all grown up now and looking to jump into the next echelon with the rest of the conference heavyweights.

Jets goaltender quickly taking on folk hero status with hot start

Stuart Skinner is giving the hometown crowd plenty to cheer about.

The Winnipeg Jets new No. 1 netminder came up with another brilliant performance, making 32 saves — including several of the highlight-reel variety — to propel his team to a 3-2 victory over the Colorado Avalanche on Wednesday night at Canada Life Centre.

With each save he makes and each win he records, Skinner is doing what he can to help turn the page on the Connor Hellebuyck era.

“I would say that they are big shoes to fill 100 per cent, but I’m not looking into the scenario of filling his shoes,” said Skinner, who lowered his goals-against average to 2.62 and raised his save percentage to .920 through three starts. “My job’s the same job as any other goalie in this league. So it’s a little bit of a difficult question for me to truly answer.”

Orphaned polar bear cub has new home at Winnipeg zoo

Eva Wasney 16 minute read 5:39 PM CDT

It’s a grey September afternoon and a small group is gathered for a special behind-the-scenes visit with Assiniboine Park Zoo’s newest resident.

“Heeeeere, bubba,” animal-care specialist Caitlin Gordon-Hall hollers from between a double layer of chain-link fencing.

After a beat, a small white face appears at the entrance of the private enclosure. The polar bear cub sniffs the air before trundling toward the fence, where his keepers have been working to encourage calm behaviour around humans ahead of his public debut on Thursday.

Gordon-Hall offers sing-song affirmations while the cub, who is nearly 200 pounds and 10 or 11 months old, observes the fawning strangers with guarded curiosity.

Ladies and gentlemen of voting age, please turn your attention to the centre ring…

Dan Lett 5 minute read Yesterday at 3:40 PM CDT

If there’s one thing that we in the news business wish for any election, it’s that the campaign is competitive and voters have multiple, viable options when it comes time to cast their ballots.

That is certainly what I wished for in this year’s Winnipeg mayoral election: a ballot with two or more competent candidates — including incumbent Scott Gillingham — that offered contrasting visions for the future of the city.

Unfortunately, this time we didn’t get competent or viable. Instead, we got a clown show stuffed with candidates for mayor who have demonstrated a stunning capacity for self-inflicted wounds.

It all started when mayoral candidates Kevin Klein and Mike Vogiatzakis both alleged they had been asked by each other’s campaign to step down to give the remaining candidate a better shot at defeating Gillingham.
