MOON ALERT: There are no restrictions to shopping or decisions today. The moon is in Scorpio.

ARIES (March 21-April 19)

Even though you feel basically happy and optimistic today, you might find yourself at odds with someone about bills, shared property, taxes, debt or disputes about who owns what. A friend or a member of a group might challenge you. Don’t take the bait. Stay calm.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20)

Be patient with those who are closest to you today because something unexpected might throw you a curveball. A friend or partner might make an unusual demand or surprise you in some way. (Whaaat?) You might also have a testy exchange with a boss or parent. Stay chill.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20)

Something might interrupt your work routine today. It could relate to a dispute about philosophy or your beliefs about something. Be careful because unexpected health concerns might also arise. Meanwhile, pet owners should keep their eye on their pets today.

CANCER (June 21-July 22)

If you are a parent, this is an accident-prone day for your kids. (Regardless of their age.) Do be aware of this. Sports accidents might also occur along with a sudden change of social plans. Avoid disputes about shared responsibilities or property because people are argumentative today. Make nice with everyone.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22)

Do what you can to maintain your own peace of mind today because that will help you to be patient with parents, bosses, partners and close friends. You will need to stay calm to avoid an argument with someone. Small appliances or minor breakages at home might also occur.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)

Go slowly and carefully today because this is a mildly accident-prone day for you. Very likely, your daily routine will change. You might find yourself at odds with someone, especially at work, or in dealing with health issues or something related to a pet. Stay calm and keep your eyes open.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)

Keep an eye on your money today because you might find money or you might lose money. Likewise, you might have to protect what you own against loss, theft or damage. A social outing might cost more than you anticipated. Meanwhile, keep an eye on your kids today.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)

Today the moon is in your sign; however, it is at odds with unpredictable Uranus and fiery Mars. This can trigger domestic arguments with partners, close friends or people at home. Since anger only makes everyone miserable, be patient.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)

Steer clear of arguments with others, especially daily contacts, because this will not further your cause. You might be passionate about your beliefs and want to persuade others to agree with you. This is understandable. But do not coerce people. Your excitement about your ideas might make you accident prone.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)

Social plans might change today; ditto for sports events and playful times with kids. Keep an eye on your money and your possessions because something could impact them. Think before you act, if you’re making financial decisions or purchases. Guard against impulse purchases. (Keep your receipts.)

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)

This is the classic day for an argument with a boss, a parent or someone in authority (especially a female). You are quite driven now with Mars in your sign; fortunately, fair Venus is also in your sign, which will ameliorate your aggressive energy.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20)

With Mercury in your sign now, you can talk yourself out of any difficulties that might arise today dealing with others regarding travel changes, philosophical or religious beliefs, or something nasty going on behind the scenes. Keep your wits about you and you’ll do fine.

TODAY’S BIRTHDAY

Actor Gary Oldman (1958) shares your birthday. You are pleasing, charming and talented. You are a passionate person but you are also contemplative. Although you appeared lighthearted, you don’t take things lightly. This is a wonderful year to enjoy yourself and your relations with others because you have a great zest for life! Let your hair down! Enjoy!

Whale of a rescue in Churchill

Manitoba conservation officers determined to rescue polar bears in distress on the Churchill shoreline were shocked when they instead came across seven beluga whales stranded in shallow water.

Churchill’s conservation office received a call at about 7:20 a.m. Monday about a white object in the water covered by seagulls half a kilometre from a public beach.

“When the public calls us and they say something white, we treat it like a bear call because we receive the call a lot,” said conservation officer Vitalii Skrynnyk.

Skrynnyk’s colleague went to investigate and discovered three adult beluga whales and four calves stranded because of low tides.

Nearly one in four watercraft fail inspection during roadside blitz to prevent aquatic pests

Nicole Buffie 3 minute read 2:09 PM CDT

More than 120 watercraft failed a roadside inspection over the weekend aimed at slowing the spread of aquatic invasive species, including zebra mussels.

The inspections were conducted by Fisheries and Oceans Canada in partnership with the Manitoba government between July 19 and 21 on the Trans-Canada Highway at the Manitoba-Ontario border. It was the second roadside blitz of the summer season.

One of the 455 vehicles transporting 502 watercraft or related equipment had visible zebra mussels present. Inspectors found 120 watercraft were not cleaned, drained, or dried and failed the inspection. Thirteen watercraft required decontamination.

“Healthy lakes and rivers are essential to the communities that rely on them. Through joint inspection efforts with the Government of Manitoba, we are working to protect those waters from aquatic invasive species and preserve Canada’s freshwater ecosystems for generations to come,” federal Fisheries Minister Joanne Thompson said in a news release.

Bombers battle back to beat Redblacks in OT

OTTAWA — For three and a half quarters, it looked like it was going to be a night Dru Brown would want to forget.

And in some ways, he still might want to erase Sunday from his memory because it wasn’t overly pretty.

But in the end, Brown got his revenge and the Winnipeg Blue Bombers recovered from a sloppy start to escape the nation’s capital with a 36-34 overtime victory over the Ottawa Redblacks.

The game literally went down to the wire as it remained tied after two overtime mini-games and had to be decided by alternating two-point conversion attempts from the 3-yard line — a first in CFL history as the new overtime format was introduced this season.

Sea Bears Dance Crew takes athleticism to the next level

Grace Penner 7 minute read 5:22 PM CDT

Many grow up believing dance can only be a hobby and never a career. The Sea Bears Dance Crew defies the notion by showing there can be a professional side of dance in Winnipeg.

Tasha Farmer and Kersey Sarao lead a team of 18 dancers from different backgrounds and styles. Together, they create a high-energy game-day experience — one that encourages everyone in the arena to get up and boogie.

Farmer started dancing at a young age, experimenting in all that was offered.

“I trained in ballet, lyrical, hip hop, musical theatre — every single style you can think of,” she said.
