For Jon Buller, it’s a reunion more than two years in the making.

“I’m excited to gather with people in Winnipeg again,” Buller said from his home in Vernon, B.C. “It’s been a long time since we could do that.”

Buller, 51, is well known among Christian audiences in the city for his popular Hear the Music concerts that used to fill the Burton Cummings Theatre on weekends in the early 2000s. He was nominated for a Juno in 2000 for Best Gospel Album.

He will be back in town Sunday, Aug. 14 at 7 p.m. for a concert at the Park Theatre.

“I have new music I want to share,” said Buller, who left Winnipeg 15 years ago to take a worship leader position at a church in B.C.

Through the new music, Buller hopes to lift spirits for people who have felt isolated and burdened for the past two years.

“The pandemic has been hard on everyone,” he said. “Through gathering, we can share our sorrows and also our hope.”

The pandemic was also challenging for Buller as a musician, who left his church position in 2019 to focus on his music.

“The timing wasn’t the best,” he said. “There were no concerts, events or conferences for two years.”

Financially, the pandemic was hard. But it was also “a blessing in disguise,” he said.

The time off gave him time to “adapt what I was doing,” he said. “I felt the mission and vision was still good, but my methods needed to change.”

That included the need to learn new skills such as making and editing videos along with internet marketing.

“The learning curve was fairly steep,” he said. “But now I have those skills now.”

He’s using those skills for his new ministry, Worship Arts Canada. “It’s an outlet for me to equip, affirm and care for musicians, artists, technicians and creatives,” he said, noting the pandemic showed the need for people in the arts to be helped develop new business models.

The pandemic also provided time for creative pursuits. “It pushed me back into writing,” he said.

For inspiration, he listened to old demo cassettes he made years ago. “Most of it wasn’t very good,” he laughed. “But there were a few diamonds in the rough. It primed the pump for me.”

The results are two new albums — Come Awake and Different Now — both of which will be showcased at the Winnipeg homecoming concert.

One of the new songs is titled Thankful, something Buller acknowledges can be hard after two years of isolation due to COVID-19.

But he hopes people can find hope in his music, despite the hardships.

“When we share our sorrows, they are divided. When we share our joys, they are multiplied,” he said, referencing the song. “By gathering, we can do that together.”

Tickets for the concert are available at jonbuller.com.

Lewis says he won’t run for office until the NDP is ‘ready’ for a general election

David Baxter, The Canadian Press 6 minute read Updated: Yesterday at 10:52 AM CDT

MONTREAL - Four months into the job, NDP Leader Avi Lewis is still in no rush.

Since winning the leadership of a party knocked to its knees in the 2025 federal election, Lewis has maintained his immediate priority is preparing the NDP for an election — not winning a seat in the House of Commons. Multiple byelections are set to take place before the end of the year; Lewis will be door-knocking with candidates in those ridings but won’t be on the ballot himself.

“I think there will be a point in the next year where I feel we're election-ready across the country. We want to run serious campaigns everywhere,” Lewis said in a recent interview in Montreal’s Plateau neighbourhood.

“We're in a position as a party on the rebound where I can't just pursue a seat at all costs. So I do need a litmus test for when is it time for me to get in there? And that's going be either in the next election or the run-up to the next election, once we are election-ready.”

‘Definitely a tough one’: Travel delays drag down Sea Bears in 114-90 loss to Vancouver Bandits

Joshua Frey-Sam 5 minute read Yesterday at 7:19 PM CDT

The Winnipeg Sea Bears will head into the playoffs on a disheartening note.

Winnipeg’s pro hoops squad had hoped to ride a wave of confidence into the Canadian Elite Basketball League post-season on the strength of locking up the top seed in the Western Conference.

Instead, the Sea Bears ended the regular season after being handed their worst defeat of the season, a 114-90 rout at the hands of the Vancouver Bandits at the Langley Events Centre in British Columbia on Sunday.

“Definitely a tough one, but we got a home game coming next week. Just get ready for that,” said Simon Hildebrandt, who was the only member of the Sea Bears available for a post-game interview.

‘Good deal of synergy’ brewing in South Osborne

Pub crawls could become the next South Osborne draw.

At least, that’s the hope of entrepreneurs in the area as three breweries build out locations in the Winnipeg neighbourhood.

Nonsuch Brewing Co. and Good Neighbour Brewing Co. have opened storefronts along the strip in the past three months. Dastardly Villain is creating a taproom and nanobrewery.

“I’m really excited to have these pubs and taprooms,” said Ben Shantz, board chair of the South Osborne Business Improvement Zone.

The Canadian Press 3 minute read Updated: Yesterday at 11:01 PM CDT

TORONTO - Kevin Gausman's time with the Toronto Blue Jays has come to an end.

The veteran right-hander was traded by the Blue Jays to the Chicago Cubs on Sunday in return for outfielder Brett Bateman and infielder Ty Southisene.

Bateman, a 24-year-old outfielder, hit .312 with three homers, 20 steals and 33 RBIs in 82 games for triple-A Iowa this season. Southisene, a 21-year-old shortstop, hit .326 in 44 games for High-A South Bend.

Gausman signed a five-year, US$110-million deal with the Blue Jays on Dec. 21, 2021 and has been one of Toronto's most reliable starters for five seasons.
