Monday is a civic holiday across the country, but in Manitoba, people will take Aug. 7 to also remember legendary Canadian and cancer research activist Terry Fox.

The holiday was simply named Civic Holiday until then-premier Greg Selinger brought on the name change in 2014.

Fox, who was born in Winnipeg, attempted to run across Canada to bring awareness to cancer research before his death in 1981 at just 22. The annual national fun run events in his name have since raised hundreds of millions of dollars for the cause.
