Family-friendly with style

Families looking for a new home often think that if a home is family-friendly, it will come up short on style.

Discovery Homes’ 2023 Fall Parade of Homes show home at 341 Ken Oblik Dr. in Prairie Pointe shows that style and family-friendly function aren’t mutually exclusive, says Reid Boles, sales representative for the two-storey, 2,271-square-foot masterpiece.

“The idea behind the design of this home — it’s called the Fairview A — was to show that you don’t have to sacrifice style when you design a home to be family-friendly,” he says.

“This home shows what’s possible when a lot of time and effort is put into creating a home that offers a well-balanced design.”

That well-balanced design starts in the foyer, says Boles.

“Families will love how the home starts off. There’s a hallway to the right of the foyer that contains a flex room that could be used either as an office or bedroom,” he says.

“The bedroom can easily be used as an in-law suite, as there’s a four- piece bath next door plus a sitting area to the left of the front door.”

Another feature placed neatly to the rear of the expansive island kitchen also adds to the home’s family-friendly design: a spice kitchen.

“Granted, it’s an upgrade, but it really adds a space that provides large families with an added dimension of utility,” he says.

“Even if you don’t have a large family, it’s a great space to have for entertaining guests. It just makes everything easier with the extra range, sink, counter and cabinet space.”

Then, as if to prove the home isn’t all about family-friendly function, Discovery’s design team put in a spectacular space directly across from the versatile kitchen/dining area.

“The great room is just a stunning space. In this case, tempered glass panels with black railing border the staircase instead of traditional spindles, which were used in previous versions of the home,” Boles explains.

“The tempered glass panels not only dress up the staircase better, but they also allow light to flow more freely between the upper and lower levels.”

Once upstairs, the glass panels — and huge floor-to-ceiling windows in the voluminous great room (which comes with a soaring 18-foot ceiling and gorgeous entertainment unit) — come squarely into play.

“First of all, the view down to the great room is just incredible,” he says. “Thanks to the glass panels, light just floods upstairs from the win- dows in the great room plus a huge window over the stairs and a sliding patio door on the back wall in the loft to the rear. It leads out to an optional front balcony.”

Suffice it to say the walk to the primary bedroom is exhilarating, with a 15-foot- long catwalk with tempered glass border creating a light-filled entryway to the beautifully isolated space.

“Parents will love the primary bed- room,” he says. “It has its own private covered balcony through a sliding patio door on its side wall, as well as a large walk-in closet and a gorgeous ensuite. It’s a spa-like space that offers a deep soaker tub and custom walk-in shower with frameless glass surround. Both the tub and shower share a beautiful custom tiled wall.”

Boles says the Fairview A is just one of many creative yet practical home designs that Discovery Homes has on offer for families.

“We can customize any of our plans to your family’s wants and needs — it’s up to you as to what you want to do with a home,” he says. “Just tell us, and we’ll do it.”

He adds that Discovery Homes builds in many neighbourhoods, from Prairie Pointe to Highland Pointe to the Trails of West St. Paul and River Springs Grove.

“We already have land available in Forest Grove Estates in Headingley. And if you have a title to land any- where inside or outside the city, we’ll build on it,” Boles says.

“You can count on us to build you a home that’s filled with style and func- tion — and that meets your every need and want.”
