Parade of Homes

Room to relax

Todd Lewys 5 minute read Saturday, Jun. 7, 2025

When homes finally started going up in Bridgwater Forest in 2008, no one really knew what the novel community was truly going to look like once it matured.

At the time, the vision was of a neighbourhood filled with a creative cross-section of home designs, featuring distinct architectural details such as cultured stone, front porches and no front-mounted garages.

Lots were to be smaller in size to create a more neighbourly, cosy feel.

Today, that vision is in full bloom, and no street embodies it better than Lake Forest Road.

While the Manitoba Home Builders’ Association’s 2024 Fall Parade of Homes comes to an official close tomorrow, that doesn’t mean your chance to visit Manitoba’s newest and finest show homes will end as well.

Almost all of the show homes that have been part of this fall’s parade will remain open for viewing well after the Parade of Homes ends.

MHBA builders have continued to see outstanding crowds visiting the 144 new homes entered in this year’s Fall Parade of Homes. This year’s entrants certainly did not disappoint, providing an amazing collection of design, style, quality, craftsmanship and choice for viewing during the Parade of Homes.

Our fall and spring Parade of Homes showcases are hosted by the Manitoba Home Builders’ Association to demonstrate the best the new-home-building industry has to offer. Whether one is in the market for a new home, considering a change or just looking for ideas for their current home, no other Parade of Homes in Canada provides the opportunity for people to experience such a collection of new home concepts, features and decor.

See the best in the housing market at Fall Parade of Homes

The newest trends in home building design and the latest fashions in home decorating are now on display as Manitoba’s best home builders showcase more than 140 new show homes during the Manitoba Home Builders’ Association’s 2024 Fall Parade of Homes.

For those looking at buying a new home, the Parade of Homes is a fantastic way to see the best in today’s new housing market. Having a good idea of what you like (and in some cases, don’t like) will help you prepare for all the decisions that come with building a new home. The MHBA’s Parade of Homes is an opportunity like no other in Canada to visit a wide variety of show homes and identify which building options you love, which you rule out, and which you absolutely must have.

Your new home should be a perfect reflection of your own style and tastes. There is no better way of determining which finishing options, floor plan layout and overall home design you want for your new home than by visiting the parade’s show homes. This will give you a great start when you begin the process of selecting your design and finishing options with your builder. Once you’ve decided on the type of new home you will build, you will need to decide on what features and finishes you will want in your home. These decisions will include interior choices like the colour and style of your cabinets, your choice of countertops and types of flooring as well as exterior finishes such as stucco, brick or paint selections.

Some builders will have hundreds of choices or options available to you, so having a good idea of what your preferences are for these items will certainly help streamline this process with your builder. One critically important step when meeting with your builder is learning from them what features and finishes come standard with your new home. If a certain home has standard finishes that suit your tastes and needs, then the number of decisions you’ll need to make will be greatly reduced. If you do plan on making upgrades on your finishing options, a good rule of thumb is to budget at least five per cent of the purchase price of your home for your upgrades.

The Manitoba Home Builders’ Association’s Parade of Homes is the signature showcase event for Manitoba’s residential construction industry, providing Manitobans interested in building their new dream home an opportunity and experience unlike any other available in Canada.

Even with the many challenges our members have faced over the past few years, MHBA builder members have continued to host successful Parade of Homes confidently. We look forward to doing that once again this fall when the MHBA’s 2024 Fall Parade of Homes starts on Saturday, Sept. 21 and runs through Sunday, Oct. 13.

This year’s Fall Parade of Homes will provide visitors with a unique opportunity to learn about the latest trends in new home and interior design, the hottest new home technology and building materials, and to potentially find their new dream home.

The MHBA’s Parade of Homes continues to be the biggest and best parade in Canada. This fall, we expect to have over 140 unique new homes on display. When one considers that some of the larger Parades in other Canadian markets feature up to 30 display homes, having over 140 different options available to visit — each one with its own layout, materials, finishes and designs — means our Parade continues to give Manitoba home buyers a unique opportunity to see and experience the widest variety of home building options in an actual home setting. An opportunity and showcase of this scope and size is uniquely Manitoban.

Breaking down the phases of new home construction

Lanny McInnes 5 minute read Saturday, Jul. 27, 2024

A common and important question that most new home buyers ask when looking at building a new home is how long will it take for my new home to be built? Just how long does the whole construction process usually take and what does each phase of construction involve? As you can guess, there is no standard answer to this question.

Each home typically has its own unique timeframe for completion. The construction timeframe for an individual new single-family home is impacted by a variety of different factors such as the style and size of the house, the amount of customization being done in the design and the construction, the lot and location, any variance or rezoning approvals that are required, the time of year construction is starting, and the availability of building materials, trades and labour. And any change of mind from the home buyer on even the smallest of design elements — structural or interior — will usually ensure that the construction process takes longer than originally planned.

There are five common phases in the construction of a new single-family home. The first phase is pre-construction. During this phase, the plans for a new home are finalized and submitted to the municipal building permit office for review. Once the plans and a permit have been approved, the next phase of construction is building the foundation. The excavation is done, and the footings and piles are formed and poured, and the foundation walls are erected. This is also usually the time that final decisions on flooring, cabinets and other interior touches are made to ensure they are ordered for timely installation.

The third phase of construction is the framing of the house. Exterior walls, interior walls and the roof are assembled. Doors and windows are installed once the house has been fully framed. The basement floor is installed, and electrical and plumbing services are roughed in. The duct work for heating, cooling and ventilation is also completed during this phase. Phase four focuses on completing both the interior and exterior work on the house. The exterior walls and the roof will be insulated. Siding or stucco will usually be applied depending on the time of year. Eavestroughs are put into place and the lot grading will be completed.

Over the past week, hundreds of people have been out and visiting the spectacular show homes on display in the 2024 Spring Parade of Homes. Every Parade, the Manitoba Home Builders’ Association likes to provide some tried and true tips for Parade veterans and rookie attendees alike on the how to make the most of your time visiting our great Parade show homes:

Wear comfortable slip-on shoes

There are over 130 stunning new homes available to visit in this Spring’s Parade. Although you likely won’t get to all of them, you will want to try to get to as many as possible. Most of the new neighbourhoods have multiple homes being shown and so you will probably park in one location and walk to many of the homes in that area. Upon entering each new home, you must take off your street shoes in order to walk through and tour the home. Given that some subdivisions have multiple homes open for viewing and you don’t want to miss a thing, that’s a lot of bending and lacing. Be sure to wear comfortable walking shoes that easily slip on and off. It will make your visit much more enjoyable.

Standing at the top of the staircase of the Dexter 27 — Randall Homes’ new 2023 Fall Parade of Homes show home at 12 Firestone Dr. in Prairie Pointe — you can’t help but marvel at how spacious the home feels.

That’s because while it’s listed at 1,698 square-feet, the two-storey home feels much larger.

“It really does feel like a 2,000 sq. ft. home,” says Jeff McArthur of Maximum Realty, the sales representative for the classy looking home, which starts off with a clean acrylic stucco and stone exterior. “It’s been masterfully designed from top to bottom.”

McArthur says the Dexter 27’s spacious, livable feel can be attributed to a subtle but significant design tweak.
