The Australian is not only the team’s punter, but as of this season, he’s also the commissioner of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers’ NFL fantasy football league.

The league has been around for a while, with longtime defensive tackle Jake Thomas previously holding the position. But now that Thomas is on the coaching staff, a current player had to step up to the plate.

“A prestigious honour, maybe, but it was just de facto — no one else was gonna do it, so, it just fell to me,” Sheahan explained after Wednesday’s closed practice as the Bombers prepare to host the Toronto Argonauts on Friday.

Door-knocking trustee candidate calls for changes to expansive boundaries

Oilers stymie Jets again

Were this a game that actually counted in the standings, the reaction from Winnipeg Jets head coach Scott Arniel probably wouldn’t have been nearly as composed.

The video evidence suggests the Edmonton Oilers had at least four players on the ice during a line change that turned into a two-on-one rush that finished with Zack Hyman setting up Viljami Marjala for a goal at 1:26 of overtime.

That left the Jets on the receiving end of a 2-1 overtime loss to sit with a pre-season record of 1-1-1.

“It was a pretty good jump,” said Arniel, who was more concerned about the shot from defenceman Dylan Samberg that helped spring the Oilers on the odd-man rush. “I’m not real keen on the slapper missing the net and going all the way down. I’m more concerned about that. It is what it is. Tough one for (Jets goaltender) Dom (DiVincentiis), because he was fantastic.”

Quintex absorbs Mat Master in family-friendly transaction

Two longtime competitors in Winnipeg’s industrial laundry sector have come together after making a deal neither company had to go to the mat for.

Quintex Services Ltd., a family-owned business founded in 1911, has acquired Mat Master, a mat and linen supplier that’s serviced Manitoba for more than 40 years.

Financial terms of the transaction, which closed at the end of July, were not disclosed.

“We loved the fact that they were family-owned,” said David Quinton, owner and president at Quintex. “We knew how they operated. They were great competitors, which told you a lot, and we thought if we could get the synergies of both of them, it would be fabulous.”
