DONNING imported silver and white vestments, a Manitoba-born priest will be ordained as a Ukrainian Catholic bishop today in preparation for a new posting in British Columbia.
Rev. Michael Kwiatkowski, 61, will become the fourth bishop of the Eparchy of New Westminster at the 6 p.m. service at Sts. Volodymyr and Olha Ukrainian Catholic Metropolitan Cathedral.
Although his work will be on the West Coast, Kwiatkowski chose to have the service in Winnipeg surrounded by colleagues, parishioners and family.

Bishop-elect Michael Kwiatkowski will be ordained as the new Ukrainian Catholic Bishop of New Westminster, BC.
“I’m so glad the ordination is here, so a lot of family and friends can attend,” said the farmer’s son from Elphinstone.
Winnipeg’s two Roman Catholic bishops will attend the bilingual English-Ukrainian service. Metropolitan Lawrence Huculak of the Ukrainian Catholic Archeparchy of Winnipeg will preside.
Kwiatkowski was officially nominated for the role in a ceremony at the cathedral Tuesday night. He leaves Winnipeg next week after his final Sunday liturgy at Protection of Blessed Virgin Mary Ukrainian Catholic Church on Boyd Avenue. The church was Kwiatkowski’s parish for the last two years after moving over from Holy Eucharist in Elmwood.
He will be installed as bishop in Vancouver on Nov. 18 and will lead his first divine liturgy as bishop of New Westminster the next day.
After his ordination to the priesthood in 1986, Kwiatkowski served as a parish priest, vice-rector at a Ukrainian university, director of spiritual formation at a seminary in Ottawa and earned a doctorate in Eastern Canon Law in 2000 from the Pontifical Oriental Institute in Rome.
With a dozen churches and more than 1,200 registered members, the B.C. eparchy is the smallest of the five Ukrainian Catholic eparchies in Canada, but covers a large region, including Vancouver Island, the Lower Mainland, the Okanagan and parts of northern B.C. as well as the Yukon.
