MOON ALERT: Avoid shopping (except food and gas) and important decisions from 3 a.m. until 6 a.m. The full moon in Aries peaks at 11:49 p.m.

ARIES (March 21-April 19)

This is a restless day for you because the full moon is in your sign. (This happens once a year and it can create tension between you and those close to you.) Patience is your best ally. Give yourself the freedom to change plans.

Tennis star Serena Williams turns 45 today.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20)

Your work routine might be interrupted because of the energy of the full moon. Be patient with co-workers. Likewise, be patient with care workers and anyone connected with your pet. Keep in mind that with Mars in your house of communications, you’re unusually forthright and direct.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20)

Be patient and diplomatic when dealing with friends and members of groups and organizations because the full-moon energy could create disruptions or tension. You might meet someone new and unusual.

CANCER (June 21-July 22)

You might feel torn between the demands of home and family versus the demands of your external world or career. You can’t please both. For this particular full moon, you can’t ignore home and family. Juggle things as best you can.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22)

Pay attention to everything you say and do because this is an accident-prone day due to the impulsive energy of the full moon, which is also aligned with unpredictable Uranus. Expect to encounter new ideas, new faces and new places.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)

Keep an eye on your cash flow and money scene as well as your possessions because something unexpected could impact your assets. Protect what you own against loss, theft or damage. Avoid hasty decisions. Quite likely, something will come to a head.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)

The only full moon opposite your sign all year is taking place, which will create tension between you and partners, spouses and close friends. Someone might do something you least expect. Think twice before you respond. Guard against knee-jerk reactions.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)

This might be a restless day for you because of interruptions related to your job, health or a pet. (This could be an accident-prone day for your pet so keep your eyes open.) Do what you can to keep the peace with others.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)

This is a challenging day for romance and relations with children as well as social outings, the arts and sporting events — all that fun stuff. Parents should be on guard to avoid accidents with kids. Likewise, sports accidents might occur. Slow down and take it easy.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)

You might feel pulled between home and family versus your external world. This is because of the conflicting energy of the full moon. Although your home routine will be interrupted, you can’t ignore the demands of your career and dealing with the community. It’s tricky.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)

This is an accident-prone day for you. Keep your wits about you. Slow down and pay attention to everything you say and do. Guard against impulsive behaviour so you have no regrets. On the upside, brilliant ideas might occur to you.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20)

Check your bank accounts and shared agreements for errors or unexpected changes. If you’ve been trying to establish a pact, things might come to a head and you finally see there’s a light at the end of the tunnel — and it’s not a train.

TODAY’S BIRTHDAY

Tennis legend Serena Williams (1981) shares your birthday. You’re a perfectionist. You’re resourceful, scholarly and obsessive. This year is the end of a nine-year cycle. Take inventory of your life and let go of the people, places and things that hold you back. Do some internal and external housecleaning. Commune with nature. Focus on being more compassionate and loving.

Positive anticipation is growing about major housing developments underway in Winnipeg’s downtown

Gabrielle Piché 10 minute read Yesterday at 6:00 AM CDT

If traffic is light and the wind is down, Somia Sadiq is able to hear the roar of Winnipeg Jets fans twice: first through her window, then on TV.

From her apartment view high above downtown, she can look out at Graham Avenue’s painted pedestrian landscape, see construction cranes and hear the heavy equipment at work as massive housing projects take shape at The Forks, at what used to be Portage Place shopping centre and at the former Hudson’s Bay building.

Sadiq has lived at 300 Main for 2 1/2 years, a few steps from the city’s famous, windy and reopened-to-pedestrians Portage Avenue intersection. At 42 storeys, it’s the tallest building in Winnipeg.

She is among 18,000 downtown residents who will soon be joined by thousands of others attracted to the city’s core by the new wave of major construction projects.

Four Jets clear waivers to join Moose

Ken Wiebe 3 minute read 2:28 PM CDT

The Winnipeg Jets organizational depth has yet to take a hit on the waiver wire.

On Saturday afternoon, all four players exposed to waivers — defenceman Isaak Phillips and forwards Nikita Chibrikov, Noah Gregor and Parker Ford — cleared, which means they can be assigned to the Manitoba Moose of the American Hockey League.

Owing to injuries to captain Adam Lowry and winger Cole Perfetti, both Chibrikov and Ford started last season on the NHL roster but spent the bulk of last season with the Moose.

Chibrikov, chosen in the second round of the 2021 NHL Draft, has dealt with multiple lower-body injuries during the prior two seasons and is still working his way back to peak form.

Nuit Blanche ready to wow in city’s core

Conrad Sweatman 5 minute read Yesterday at 6:33 PM CDT

For one night each September, downtown Winnipeg becomes an art gallery — an amusement park, even.

During Nuit Blanche, which takes place tonight, 3D projections spill across the Exchange District, The Forks and St. Boniface, and thousands flood the city core to take in live music, DJs and installations.

“There really isn’t anything like it. I know every promoter probably tells you that, but we are the only event that works at this scale in the fall,” says Nuit Blanche general manager Kurt Tittlemier.

“Culture Days Manitoba is run with the mission statement to make free, accessible artistic programming to all,” he adds, referring to the multi-week national festival, “and Nuit Blanche is our flagship event.”

Prost! Raise a glass to Oktoberfest

Ben Sigurdson 4 minute read 2:01 AM CDT

As September comes to a close, a pair of local breweries are bringing some serious gemütlichkeit.

For the uninitiated, gemütlichkeit’s a word that doesn’t translate neatly from German to English, but which roughly means friendliness and good cheer.

Both Devil May Care Brewing Co. (155 Fort St.) and Kilter Brewing Co. (450 Rue Deschambault) are hosting Oktoberfest parties this weekend featuring food, music, games and, of course, plenty of beer.

Both breweries are rolling out special releases to coincide with their respective Oktoberfests — expect malty festbiers, marzens, rauchbiers and other German-inspired brews, served up in hefty steins alongside Bavarian-inspired fare. Devil May Care’s festivities run through to Sunday and feature eats by Freebird Kitchen, while Kilter keeps the party going through to Saturday, Oct. 3, and is offering pretzels and Oktoberfest-themed hot dogs. Lederhosen is encouraged.

Time for the PUB to review Winnipeg water rates

Editorial 4 minute read 2:01 AM CDT

We take you now to just over a month ago, to the Public Utilities Board and its decision about water and sewer rates for Russell, Binscarth, Angusville, Rossburn and Gambler First Nation.

Why? Just wait.

The area is supplied with water and sewage services by the Russell-Binscarth Water and Wastewater Utility, which has a total of 1,014 customers.

As the PUB noted in an Aug. 27, 2026 order on the utility’s rates, “The [water treatment plant] gets water from two groundwater wells that were upgraded in 2016 and the raw water main was installed in 1984. The water distribution system is primarily cast iron pipe. The raw water line will need to be upgraded in the near future to keep up with demand.”
