It’s difficult to imagine summer music festivals while Sleigh Ride continues its annual musical assault in every public place.
So it was a welcome change of pace Tuesday when Rockin’ the Fields of Minnedosa announced the lineup for its 20th annual classic-rock festival, which takes place Aug. 2-4, 2024
Rockin’ the Fields has welcomed artists who’ve scored hits in the aughts the past couple of summers, and 2024 will be no different. Vancouver post-grunge bands Theory of a Deadman and Econoline Crush (fronted by Manitoba-born Trevor Hurst), Toronto’s Amanda Marshall and Kitchener, Ont., newcomer JJ Wilde are part of a lineup that also includes 20th-century hitmakers Kim Mitchell, Colin James, Prism and Molly Hatchet.

Theory of a Deadman will be among the acts at Rockin’ the Fields next summer.
Toque, a group that includes Winnipeg bassist Brent Fitz and specializes in Canadian hard-rock hits of the 1970s and ’80s, is also on the bill.
Tickets go on sale Friday at 10 a.m. at rockinthefields.ca, with a general three-day pass costing $250 plus fees and taxes.
Meanwhile, Dauphin’s Countryfest on Monday announced the second wave of performers for its 35th edition, which takes place June 28-30, 2024.
Clint Black, who is known for country classics such as Killin’ Time and A Good Run of Bad Luck, joins a mainstage lineup that already included Alabama, the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and Jo Dee Messina.
Also announced Monday were Canadian singer-songwriter Carolyn Dawn Johnson, the Washboard Union, Jason Blaine, and Landmark singer Quinton Blair.

Amanda Marshall will be part of the Rockin’ the Fields lineup in August.
Three other Manitobans, Mike Sacharko, Ryan Keown and JR Charron, will team up to perform a tribute to Highwayman members Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson and Johnny Cash.

● Phantom of the Paradise, the 1974 Brian De Palma movie that was a hit in Winnipeg and flopped everywhere else, will celebrate the 50th anniversary of its initial release Nov. 2 at the Burton Cummings Theatre.

Canadian singer-songwriter Carolyn Dawn Johnson has been added to the Dauphin Countryfest lineup.
Besides a screening of the film, cast members Paul Williams, Peter Elbling, Archie Hahn and Jeffery Comanor will make appearances and the tribute band Swanage will perform the movie’s soundtrack, which sold 20,000 copies in Winnipeg alone.
Tickets go on sale Friday at ticketmaster.ca, with prices starting at $20 plus fees.
● Bahamas, the Juno Award-winning indie-folk act led by Toronto’s Afie Jurvanen, plays the Burt April 27. Tickets go on sale today at 10 a.m. at livenation.com.
● The Country Mixtape Tour, which teams up Canadian singers Tyler Joe Miller, Shawn Austin and Andrew Hyatt, comes to the Club Regent Event Centre April 20. Tickets go on sale Friday at 10 a.m. at ticketmaster.ca.

Janelle Nadeau, the Manitoba-born harpist who performed A Prairie Ensemble Dec. 5 at the Club Regent Event Centre, has a good ear for farm equipment as well as Baroque-era classical music.
The principal harpist for the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra and Vancouver Opera returns every August to drive the combine at the the grain farm she grew up at near Fannystelle, about 50 kilometres west of Winnipeg.
“I just like doing it so much,” the 37-year-old mother of two young children said in an interview with the Free Press prior to the Club Regent show. “I always say to my children that we have two homes. When I’m in Manitoba, I feel I’m at home.”
The giant harvesters have about 17,000 parts — far more than an automobile — and like an symphony, each part must do its job properly to bring in the crop.
When one part fails, the combine comes to a halt, so an operator must keep alert; one rattle caused by a shredded belt can bring work to a standstill.
“I’m always listening. You have to listen to your equipment,” she says. “We don’t want to throw any of that crop out the back of the combine, that’s for sure.
“It’s listening in a very different way. As the day goes along (the crop) gets more dry or the wind might pick up so then the crop changes again.”
