MOON ALERT: There are no restrictions to shopping or important decisions today. The moon is in Sagittarius.

ARIES (March 21-April 19)

Oh, happy day! As of yesterday, Mercury is no longer retrograde; and today, the moon is in an exciting part of your chart, which is why you want to run away and join the circus. You want freedom! You want excitement! You want something fresh and fun to happen! (Good luck.)

TAURUS (April 20-May 20)

You’re in a resourceful frame of mind today, which is why you might see new uses for shared property or new ways to handle shared responsibilities. You might also see new ways to invest your holdings and your assets. This is a strong time for you. Use it!

GEMINI (May 21-June 20)

You might attract someone quite powerful to you today. Whether or not this is the case, you will definitely have to compromise when dealing with others and be prepared to go more than halfway. This might be challenging because you feel ambitious right now. Nevertheless, it is what it is.

CANCER (June 21-July 22)

It’s the end of the week; nevertheless, you’re in a productive frame of mind. Hopefully, others will listen to you, because you have ideas for improvements or reforms at work. You might also be gung-ho to improve your body or your health. You’re pondering changes to your future goals.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22)

This is a playful day for you. However, it will also be a particularly powerful day for you if you work in the entertainment world, show business, hospitality industry or sports sector, because you’re in a resourceful, inventive frame of mind. You can see new and better ways of doing things. Definitely.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)

Discussions with family members, especially females, might be powerful today. Be courteous and listen. Possibly you or someone else will see ways to make improvements either to your home situation or your family dynamic. (This is not surprising, because there is no end to better.)

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)

Your mind is incisive today, which is why you will get to the bottom of anything. You will also spot a phoney a mile away and be able to tell if someone is dishonest. It’s like you have X-ray vision. “Swami sees all, knows all, tells nothing.”

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)

Because you’re in a resourceful frame of mind today, you might see new applications and uses for something you already own. (Could that lawn mower become a floor lamp?) You might also see new ways to earn money on the side.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)

Today you will have a powerful reaction, as well as powerful feelings, about many things. (You might not notice this — but others will.) Basically, you want to get things done. You want results. You also want to play and get some time off for good behaviour. Relax — you can have it all.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)

Secrets might be revealed today. In fact, these secrets might relate to something romantic, because you are in a playful mood and ready to socialize with others. You will also enjoy entertaining at home and finishing DIY repairs.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)

You might have a powerful discussion with a friend today. They might want to share a confidence with you, or they might have something they feel they have to tell you. Whatever this is, you will handle it with tact and diplomacy — as is your wont.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20)

You are noticed today. In fact, some people see you as having power, clout or some kind of influence, which is why someone might ask you for help. This is a busy, energetic time for you. You’ll enjoy shopping for beautiful things.

TODAY’S BIRTHDAY

Actor Channing Tatum (1980) shares your birthday today. You are bold, yet cautious. You believe in logical planning and careful preparation. This is a slower-paced year. It’s OK to take a rest so you can rejuvenate yourself. Concentrate on your needs and relationships, and seek out people who have your back.

Food literacy curriculum on the menu

Manitoba has a new recipe for health class and “food literacy” is a key ingredient.

The in-class portion of phys-ed has historically involved lessons about puberty, the risks of consuming drugs and dissecting Canada’s food guide.

A new pilot program asks teachers to expand their nutrition units and include in-depth discussions about how everything from diet culture to food insecurity affects eating habits.

“This is really moving beyond a conception of food as only fuel, where you just boil down food to its calories, its vitamins,” said Sarah Elvins, a food historian at the University of Manitoba who researches popular culture and marketing.

There’s a chill in the air, which must mean hockey is right around the corner.

Sure enough, the Winnipeg Jets open training camp this week, full of excitement and hope for the upcoming campaign.

However, there are a few other emotions surrounding the club right now, which were evident when we opened up the monthly Free Press mailbag. Specifically when it comes to a certain goaltender who isn’t expected to show his face  while waiting news on a trade he’s demanded.

Among them: Angst. Apathy. Anger.

Jets suspend goaltender Hellebuyck for failure to report to training camp

The Canadian Press 2 minute read Updated: Yesterday at 10:02 PM CDT

WINNIPEG - The Winnipeg Jets suspended goaltender Connor Hellebuyck on Wednesday night for failing to report to training camp.

The team said general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff would address the media Thursday morning. It did not specify the length of the suspension for the U.S. Olympic star.

Hellebuyck, a three-time Vezina Trophy winner and 2025 Hart Trophy winner as NHL MVP, publicly requested a trade from the team on Aug. 27.

In a statement posted on X by his agent, Ray Petkau, Hellebuyck said he had privately requested a trade “several months ago” and that he gave the organization time to address it “quietly and respectfully.”

We’re not falling back, springing forward anymore; Manitoba staying on daylight time

Carol Sanders 3 minute read Updated: 9:55 AM CDT

Time’s up for the time change in Manitoba.

Manitobans won’t be setting their clocks back an hour when daylight time comes to an end elsewhere on Nov. 1.

After surveying residents on the twice annual clock adjustment, the province announced Thursday that it will no longer spring forward and fall back, as has been the case for the majority of the past 110 or so years.

“We heard from Manitobans loud and clear — no more changing the clocks in Manitoba,” Premier Wab Kinew said in a news release Thursday. “Permanent daylight saving time is good for our health, good for business and good for parents… This change means one less adjustment families have to deal with each spring and fall. That’s why this November, your clocks won’t be changing.”

It’s done here, too

The GLITTER program in Portland was held up last week as a glowing example of progressive, community-minded litter removal that Winnipeg and its downtown agencies should aspire to replicate.

Well, the grass may seem greener, and the encampments a little cleaner, but ask around and you may learn that Winnipeg already has community-led programs doing this work and doing it well.

I can’t fault anyone for raising the merits of a made-in-Portland program for the sake of discussion. After all, it is a timeless Winnipeg pastime to ask why our city lags behind others on any number of trends, programs, or amenities. But the suggestion that “some version” of GLITTER should be considered here falls short when it fails to acknowledge the parallel efforts already delivering results here.
