Demolition of the fire-ravaged former Vulcan Ironworks building can now resume after a provincial stop work order was lifted.

A provincial government spokesman confirmed Thursday evening Manitoba Workplace Safety and Health inspected the site May 28, which led work to stop.

The province initially added a stop work order for the site on July 11, 2023, which was connected to the inspection.

“There was still a need identified on Tuesday, May 28 for further information to ensure appropriate procedures, training and (personal protective equipment) were in place to address risks prior to demolition/remediation work commencing … Now that next steps have been identified to address risks prior to demolition, the … stop work order has been lifted,” the spokesman wrote in an email.

The long-awaited demolition got started last week.

Fire gutted the property at Sutherland Avenue and Maple Street North in July 2023 and several fires have followed since, triggering demands from city officials and community members to clean up the rubble.

The stop work order was issued due to health and safety concerns about possible asbestos in the rubble.
