Winnipeggers can get their paws on the purrfect pint this summer.

The Winnipeg Humane Society and Good Neighbour Brewing Company have launched a contest called Pets on Pints, where winners can see their furry friends on the labels of limited-edition beer cans.

“We know people love their pets. We know people love seeing their pets on things. And we know Manitobans love beer,” Carly Peters, director of communications and marketing for the WHS, said.

Pet lovers can submit a photo of their animals at winnipeghumanesociety.ca. Each vote costs $1, with all proceeds going to the humane society. Two winners will be featured on the cans, and two others who garner more than 100 votes will be selected at random to complete the four-pack.

The pilsner beer will be called Pet Pals and Good Neighbour Brewing Company will donate five per cent of all proceeds to WHS. Voting ends June 21.

The humane society wanted to have a fundraiser that would give back to supporters and not strictly ask for their money, Peters said.

“We understand times are tough for most people. We appreciate every dollar people give us, big and small.”

Staff members at the WHS had dreamed about creating a specialty beer but found there were too many regulations involved, Peters said. Instead, the WHS went looking for a partner and found Good Neighbour.

“They make incredible beer that everyone loves, and our values align with their values of community support and supporting local. It was just a great fit for us. And, plus, they also have a pet-friendly patio,” Peters said.

The partnership has been the first opportunity for the brewery to work with a community organization.

“We’re all animal lovers here. So, it means a lot to be able to support the great work that the Winnipeg Humane Society is doing in a super-fun way like this,” Rebekah Grisim, community manager for Good Neighbour Brewing Company, said.

The proceeds raised from Pets on Pints will fund the WHS’s services, such as vet care, emergency food banks, and education programs.

The beers will be available to purchase as a four-pack from Good Neighbour Brewing Company’s tap room, the Bottle Shop, and the Beer Can, beginning July 17.

The WHS and Good Neighbour Brewing Company will host a pet parade showcasing the beer cans, winning pets and other pets from the community on the brewery’s patio on July 17.
