Wanted sex offender arrested

3:16 PM

A sex offender who allegedly breached conditions imposed on him when he was released from prison in June has been arrested, police said Thursday.

RCMP said on July 3 that Clay Byron Starr (a.k.a. Chad Crate, Byron Richard, Clay Richard, Clayton Starr and Richard Starr) was evading officers. He was released from Millhaven Institution, a federal prison in Bath, Ont., on June 20 and was expected to live in Sandy Bay First Nation.

Police previously said Starr was sentenced to 13 years in prison in October 2013 after he stole a stranger’s running vehicle with a female youth inside in June 2011. He “violently sexually assaulted” the girl and fled from police in a high-speed chase, the release said.

Man shot by police near Sanford

3:05 PM

A police officer shot a man near Sanford after he allegedly assaulted a woman and tried to light several vehicles on fire Wednesday night.

Officers were sent to a home in the Rural Municipality of Macdonald at about 9:10 p.m. and were “confronted” by a 23-year-old man armed with “an edged weapon,” RCMP said in a news release.

An officer shot the man, who was taken into custody and given medical attention by police. He was transported to Health Sciences Centre by ambulance in stable condition and later released to police. He remained in custody Thursday afternoon.

The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba is looking into the shooting. The police watchdog said in a news release that the man fled before RCMP arrived and emerged while officers were searching a wooded area.

The man was shot in the leg, the IIU said.

The watchdog is asking witnesses and anyone with information about the incident, or video, to call 1-844-667-6060.

School nutrition program now in place

12:09 PM

Manitoba’s premier and education minister spoke at a Rossmere-area school Thursday to celebrate the first week of the universal school nutrition program.

The NDP government committed $30 million in this year’s budget to ensure food is available to all public school students. Premier Wab Kinew and Education and Early Childhood Learning Minister Nello Altomare held a media event at Donwood School late Thursday morning.

“Kids can’t learn on an empty stomach,” Kinew said in a news release.

“We made a commitment to Manitoba families that we’d make sure kids across our province had access to food when they go to school, and we’ve delivered on that promise. As kids head back to class this week, they’ll be able to get a meal or a snack when they need one, so they can concentrate, learn and reach their full potential.”

Approximately $21 million has been allocated to public schools within the 37 school divisions, with $6 million specifically earmarked for 50 schools in communities with “high socio-economic need.”

Man, 35, stabbed to death in northern Manitoba

10:25 AM

A 33-year-old man has been charged in a fatal stabbing that happened at a home in Shamattawa First Nation on Monday night.

The 35-year-old victim was taken to the remote northern community’s nursing station, where he died of his injuries, said RCMP.

Police said Michael Mander Redhead remains in custody, after being charged with second-degree murder.

The victim and suspect knew each other, said RCMP.

A vehicle travelling north on 210 collided with a vehicle heading south.

Police seek help in identifying woman

8:43 AM

Police are asking for the public’s help in identifying a woman found dead on Main Street last month.

The woman was found in a common area of a multi-dwelling building on the 600 block of Main on Aug. 10, the Winnipeg Police Service said Thursday.

She is believed to have died from a drug overdose, police said. Investigators have been unable to identify the woman, and police released a sketch of her.

The woman was believed to be in her 20s or 30s. She was about 5-5 in height, with a very thin build. She had short dark hair and brown eyes, with a mole above her left eye. She was wearing a grey Bench hoodie, black pants with a yellow stripe down the side, black socks and black runners. Police released pictures of a large tan handbag and blue Roots suitcase she had with her.

Police have asked anyone with information about the woman to contact the missing persons unit at 204-986-6250, or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 204-786-8477 (TIPS) or winnipegcrimestoppers.org.
