Man injured in home invasion

A 36-year-old man is recovering after he was assaulted in a home invasion in the St. Vital area during the early hours of the morning on Christmas Day.

City police responded to a break-in at a townhouse in the 1700 block of St. Mary’s Road around 3 a.m. on Wednesday.

In a news release, the Winnipeg Police Service said attending officers found an injured victim who had been attacked with “an edged weapon” during a home invasion.

The suspect fled the scene before the police arrived, WPS said.

The release states patrol officers and the canine unit attended the scene and provided emergency medical care to the lone victim.

“He was transported to hospital in unstable condition, and has since been upgraded to stable,” police said.

The major crimes unit has assumed the investigation and is working on a description of the suspect.

A duty officer tasked with taking reporter calls on Wednesday morning declined to provide any further information.
