WOLFVILLE – Selena Sturmay’s team surged to the top of the women’s leaderboard Wednesday in the Home Hardware Curling Pre-Trials with a pair of victories.
Sturmay (4-1) earned a 7-6 victory over Saskatchewan’s Nancy Martin in the morning draw before capturing an 11-5 decision over Saskatoon’s Ashley Thevenot in the afternoon draw.
After winning four in a row, Kayla MacMillan lost 5-4 in an extra end to Myla Plett in the evening to fall into a tie at 4-1 atop the women’s standings with Sturmay.

On the men’s side, Jean-Michel Ménard dumped Mark Kean 8-5 at night to get to a 4-2 record.
Scott Howard, who had the evening off, was 4-1. Braden Calvert, Jordan McDonald and Sam Mooibroek were all 3-2 with the night off.
The top men’s and women’s teams at the end of the round robin advance directly to best-of-three finals starting Saturday. The second and third seeds meet in semifinals.
The men’s and women’s winners of the pre-trials join the Montana’s Curling Trials fields Nov. 22-30 in Halifax.
The trials determines Canada’s teams for February’s Winter Olympics in Milan and Cortina, Italy.
Plett’s victory gave her team a 3-2 record ahead of a logjam of four teams at 2-3.
In other games Wednesday evening, Krista Scharf edged Beth Peterson 7-6, Danielle Inglis beat Nancy Martin 8-5 and Jayden King defeated Owen Purcell 8-3.
