Sioux Valley Dakota Nation has a new chief just days after its now former chief was charged with an alleged sexual assault from 41 years ago.

A post on the community’s Facebook page says newly-elected Chief Jennifer Bone, who previously served as chief from 2018 to 2023, defeated Vincent Tacan by a vote of 371 to 212 during Thursday’s election.

Tacan, who himself previously served as chief from 2004 to 2006, and again from 2010 to 2018 when he was defeated by Bone, was charged four days before the election.

Sioux Valley Dakota Nation Chief Jennifer Bone previously served as chief from 2018 to 2023.

Days before the election Tacan said in a social media post that he would be “fighting this matter in the courts.

“I have a lifetime of protecting my community, advocating for our members, and the years trying to advance Sioux Valley as chief … as a leader, I knew what I was walking into and that Rez politics is dirty.”

Both Bone and Tacan could not be reached for comment.

RCMP said earlier this week that the victim, who was under the age of 16 in 1984 when the alleged offence occurred, came forward to report it to the Virden detachment in May.

RCMP, which said the investigation is continuing, did not release the woman’s identity or the community where the assault took place.

The election also saw five band councillors elected. Randall Wasicuna, Melissa Hotain, Bill McKay, Darryl Hapa and Jon Bell were the victors of the 14 candidates running for band council.

The First Nation is located about 50 kilometres west of Brandon.
