Ste. Anne police have charged a youth after a schoolyard fight that sent one student to hospital.

Police Chief Marc Robichaud confirmed two students got into a fight during a break at Ste. Anne Collegiate on Tuesday. A video of the fight is circulating among student groups.

“I can tell you I was disturbed when I saw the video,” Robichaud said Thursday.

A source who has seen the video told the Free Press the footage shows a student approaching another student from behind and striking him.

Several bystanders recorded video of the incident.

The victim was taken to hospital with minor injuries and released, Robichaud said. The investigation is ongoing.

A letter sent to parents and guardians of students at the school said there was an assembly Wednesday morning to address the incident.

“One student harmed another student, and several students nearby did not take steps to get help. This situation was troubling, and we felt it was important to speak directly with all students right away,” read the letter, signed by principal Yvan St. Vincent.

“The vast majority of our students do the right thing each day, and we are proud of them. Yesterday’s incident does not reflect who we want to be as a school, and addressing it openly helps ensure that we move forward in a positive way.”

In an emailed statement, Seine River School Division superintendent Colin Campbell declined to comment on the matter, citing the police investigation. Campbell said the division was aware of the incident.

Tuesday’s incident follows two separate assaults last month at Oak Park High School in Charleswood. The victims, both from Ukraine, were attacked a day apart in the same washroom.

Two videos of the second assault, one allegedly recorded by a member of the group, showed the 14-year-old victim being punched, thrown to the floor, kicked in the face and stomped on.

A second video, recorded by a student in a closed stall, captured audio of the assault. No one in the washroom stepped in to help.

Three girls have been charged in the two incidents, including one accused in both.
