There is no other way to say this: it is becoming clear that Donald J. Trump, the president of the United States of America, is unhinged.
And his instability is becoming a threat to the peace, safety and security of the globe.
Look at what he’s said just since the weekend: Asked about Iran at the White House Easter Egg Roll, he offered up “If I had my choice, what would I like to do? Take the oil, because it’s there for the taking …Unfortunately, the American people would like to see us come home. If it were up to me, I’d take the oil. I’d keep the oil. I would make plenty of money.”
Alex Brandon / Pool, THE Associated Press FILES
U.S. President Donald Trump
Unprompted, on Easter, he sent out the social media message “Tuesday will be Power Plant Day, and Bridge Day, all wrapped up in one, in Iran. There will be nothing like it!!! Open the Fuckin’ Strait, you crazy bastards, or you’ll be living in Hell – JUST WATCH! Praise be to Allah. PRESIDENT DONALD J. TRUMP”.
Asked about his willingness to commit acts recognized as war crimes, such as destroying Iranian electrical grids and desalination drinking water plants, and saying he would bomb Iran “back to the Stone Ages, where they belong,” he said:
“You know what’s a war crime? Allowing a sick country with demented leadership to have a nuclear weapon,” Trump said later. (The United States’ own intelligence has argued that Iran was not in possession of nuclear weapons when the U.S. and Israel attacked the country in February and Trump himself claimed their ability to make such weapons was completely destroyed in an earlier U.S. attack last June.)
Later still, he repeated threats against Iran from an outdoor podium at the White House while flanked by first lady Melania Trump and the Easter Bunny, and in a later news conference, claimed that Iranian citizens who are being bombed are asking the U.S. to continue the bombing. He also argued attacking civilian infrastructure is not a war crime because Iran’s leaders are “animals.”
Early Tuesday morning, it was the chilling threat, “A whole civilization will die tonight, never to be brought back again.”
Trump is a global danger, and not only because of his threats to Iran.
He’s a danger to those he’s killed by ending U.S. aid programs. By November of 2025, the USAID cuts had resulted in 600,000 deaths, two-thirds of them children. It is anticipated that, by 2030, over 9.4 million deaths will be attributable to the cuts.
He’s a danger because of his fondness and admiration for despots like Russian President Vladamir Putin and North Korea’s Kim Jong Un.
He’s a danger to our children’s futures because of his sheer ignorance of the growing effects of climate change, and by his ending of climate programs and cheerleading for expanded oil, gas and coal development.
Equally, he’s a danger to the future of children all over the world because of the economic and environmental damage being done by his expansionist military operations — and threats of more, against Cuba and beyond.
He’s a danger to public health due to his government’s dismantling of preventative health in his own country, and due to that same government’s cost-cutting cancellation and destruction of ongoing medical research.
And he’s a danger because he’s clearly unstable.
When you consider what we’re seeing publicly from Trump, you can only imagine what nightmarish scenario is unfolding behind closed doors.
This is not in any way funny. This is not a joke. This is not just “Trump being Trump.”
This is a clear and present danger that extends well beyond America’s borders, and anyone who refuses to see that is, at this point, wilfully ignoring the truth.
