MOON ALERT: Avoid shopping (except food and gas) and important decisions after 5 p.m. The moon is in Leo.

ARIES (March 21-April 19)

An unusual idea or an unexpected event might take you into an entirely new headspace. You might entertain the notion of a new kind of future for yourself — something more romantic or more spiritual/touchy-feely (call it whatever you like) — than you had previously thought.

Vikings star Travis Fimmel turns 47 today.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20)

You are certainly aware of the value of wealth in practical terms. However, you might receive a new interpretation of the energy of wealth and what is possible to achieve — for yourself or for others. This is illuminating and perhaps liberating.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20)

Something might occur that makes you more deeply appreciate a friend or a group to which you might belong. You see this interaction benefits you in an almost idealistic way. Or perhaps this person (or group) inspires you.

CANCER (June 21-July 22)

You might be admired for taking a stand on a certain issue or speaking up about something important to you. What you do will reveal a level of compassion, understanding and idealistic values that might inspire someone else.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22)

Some kind of subtle shift might take place that prompts you to think about a different future for yourself. Or perhaps a different path. Or you might see how travel or further education can change your life. Whatever it is — it’s heartening.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)

With Venus in your sign, you are gracious and diplomatic, which is a good thing because a boss, parent or someone in authority might do something that catches you off-guard. Ironically, whatever happens might open your eyes to a new way of doing things in the future.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)

People admire you right now. In an unexpected way, something related to travel, further education, medicine or the law might catch you off-guard and open new worlds for you. This could be related to a friend or a group — or not. Be open to see what develops because it might be meaningful.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)

Be aware that people notice you. Perhaps this is because something unexpected benefits you, such as an inheritance, a bonus, a gift or indirect benefit through a partner or friend. Whatever happens might allow you to expand your world in a way that offers you a more promising future.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)

Listen to the ideas of partners, spouses and close friends because they might be the source of something that can lead to a positive shift in your life. It could be a deeper understanding or appreciation of what you have and who you are. Or it might show you a door you can open.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)

Something related to your health, job or even a pet might have the power to inspire you to consider something in a new light. You might not be content with old goals because, suddenly, new insights promise a refreshing level of consciousness.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)

You might feel more inspired by romance or something related to kids that lifts you to a new level of appreciation and ambition. It’s as if you are suddenly seeing new possibilities or appreciating things in a new way, and it’s like an epiphany for you.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20)

Your appreciation of the value of home and family might take on a new level of meaning. You might suddenly grasp it is something more important than you thought. Whatever happens opens your mind to a new awareness.

Province urged to lead effort to prevent dog maulings

More than two dozen animal advocacy groups are calling for an immediate meeting with federal and provincial governments and First Nations leadership to co-ordinate efforts to deal with problem dog populations following the mauling death of a rescue worker this month.

The Winnipeg Humane Society, K9 Advocacy Manitoba and Partners in Prevention are among the 26 groups asking for the creation of an advisory committee — which would include veterinary experts — to ensure a provincewide strategy on problem dog populations is developed and implemented.

“This is very much that call for action,” said Christina Von Schindler, CEO of the humane society. “The time is now.”

They say there are “systematic gaps” in dealing with overpopulation and the lack of veterinary services in First Nation communities. They say it is tantamount to a public health crisis.

WAG wraps exhibition showcasing fine art of a sweet bike

Growing up in rural Manitoba, Allen Hildebrand was always tinkering with something. While on a flight to Mexico in 2016, it felt like an act of fate when he picked up a magazine and opened it to the ultimate project.

“It had this dirty old bike on it and I was like, ‘I want one of these in my life,’” Hildebrand says.

After 10 years, he is running out of space in his garage after filling it with four bikes, two of which are featured in a pop-up motorcycle exhibition at the WAG-Qaumajuq that ends Thursday.

The art gallery is broadening the perspective of what fine art can be with Art Moto: Where Design Meets the Road, featuring 25 motorbikes hand-built by local enthusiasts and set up in the gallery’s main hall and skylight.

Manitoba got top marks from the Canadian Federation of Independent Business for internal trade barrier reduction.

The business entity released its annual interprovincial co-operation report card earlier this month. Manitoba scored an “A” and was top of the class compared to fellow provinces.

The CFIB noted Manitoba has introduced legislation to improve the exchange of goods and services between reciprocating jurisdictions.

Manitoba and New Brunswick led the way in implementing direct-to-consumer alcohol sales without extra administrative hurdles or price markups.

A Good Samaritan who was trying to help a woman who appeared to be suffering from a drug overdose on Tuesday night was instead stabbed by her companion, police say.

The victim, a 51-year-old man, came across the woman near Jubilee Avenue and Osborne Street at about 9:15 p.m. on Tuesday and tried to assist her, before a suspect came up and stabbed him in the upper body. Police say the suspect knows the woman.

The 51-year-old was rushed to hospital in unstable condition, where he was given medical treatment. The woman, too, was taken to hospital for medical attention. Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service personnel alerted police to the incident.

Patrol officers, along with a police dog unit, found the suspect on the 400 block of Brandon Avenue just before 11 p.m. He tried to run, but officers made the arrest and seized two knives, police said.

Preserving past, pondering future of 142-year-old downtown church

Chris Kitching 6 minute read 6:55 PM CDT

A 142-year-old church in downtown Winnipeg needs about $7.7 million for upgrades and related costs, while an ongoing heritage renewal project aims to create a blueprint for its future.

Potential options include selling Holy Trinity Anglican Church and leasing it back for a decades-long term, or building an apartment or office tower on an existing surface parking lot to generate revenue, officials said Wednesday.

“I think that is part of the negotiation and ensuring we have the right partners, but it is hard to put down on paper precisely every aspect of the future of a place of worship,” project manager Stephen Borys said of the potential duration of a sale and leaseback agreement to ensure the church still exists generations from now.

Similar agreements with 50- or 100-year leases exist elsewhere in Canada, he said, noting the option has been on the table for Holy Trinity for a year.
