GEMINI (May 21-June 20)

Store up some physical energy so you can blow off any pent-up steam that might be building within you. Pay attention to everything you say and do to avoid accidents. Relax and entertain at home.

CANCER (June 21-July 22)

You have a strong need to share your ideas. This could relate to something financial because you are focused right now on earnings, cash flow and personal wealth. (Because you can get richer this year!)

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22)

Enjoy physical, competitive sports and activities with friends and groups. Be careful, because you might want to shop for beautiful things as well — clothing, art objects and jewelry — which is a poor idea. Do not do this during the moon alert. (See above.)

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)

Although this is generally an excellent time for you to shop for wardrobe goodies — not right now. Most of this day is a moon alert. (See above.). Nevertheless, your ambition is strong. You’re going to go after what you want! A discussion with someone younger could be beneficial.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)

This is a popular time for you, and this is a wonderful day to shmooz with others. Because there is a moon alert for most of this day, it’s a poor day for important decisions and shopping. However, it’s a great day to relax and enjoy the company of friends.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)

It’s important to know you make an excellent impression on others at this time, which is why this is a good week to go after what you want in terms of personal appearances, interviews and asking authority figures for permission or approval. However, this is not the day. See moon alert above.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)

Avoid financial decisions and definitely shopping for anything other than food and gas, because most of this day is a moon alert. (See above.) However, relations with authority figures are excellent. On the other hand, be patient with partners, spouses and close friends.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)

This is a tricky day, because the moon is in your sign, which gives you a slight advantage. Nevertheless, it’s a moon alert for most of this day. You have the energy to work, but be careful — agree to nothing important. Don’t volunteer for anything. Restrict spending to food and gas.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)

You want to play! However, you might feel tension building up within you because tomorrow the full moon will be in your sign. Tension will likely arise between you and spouses, partners and close friends. Explore the arts and creative activities.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20)

This is the perfect day to hang out with friends and take things easy. If you choose to work hard, stick with a situation that requires few decisions. Most of this day is a moon alert, which is a poor time for new directions and new ideas. Restrict spending to food and gas.

TODAY’S BIRTHDAY

Former U.S. first lady Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis (1929-94) shares your birthday. You’re competitive and driven. You’re charming, multitalented and full of intellectual energy. This is the final year of a nine-year cycle. Let go of the people, places and things from the past that held you back. Do some internal and external housecleaning. Focus on being compassionate and loving.

RCMP charge N.D. man after driver flees Emerson border crossing

Free Press staff 2 minute read Yesterday at 1:57 PM CDT

A North Dakota man faces a string of charges after police say he fled the Emerson border crossing, leading RCMP on a pursuit along Highway 75.

Emerson RCMP were notified just before 6:30 p.m. Saturday that a man entering Canada from North Dakota had sped away from the port of entry after Canada Border Services Agency officers flagged him for a secondary screening.

Officers from several RCMP detachments and the Integrated Border Enforcement Team were sent to Highway 75.

Police said Morris RCMP tried unsuccessfully to stop the vehicle south of the town. Police later blocked Highway 75 at Provincial Road 210, but said the driver went around police vehicles, drove through a ditch and narrowly missed an officer before continuing north toward Winnipeg.

Big off-season trade bolsters Pistons

Cassidy Dankochik 7 minute read 1:28 PM CDT

In what’s becoming a regular occurrence, the Steinbach Pistons have nearly a whole new crop of players set to take the ice for them this season.

Just eight players are returning from last year’s squad that finished with the second-highest record in the league.

With such a fresh roster, head coach and general manager Paul Dyck said the Pistons are a “work in progress,” noting this was the first time he’s only had a single-digit number of returnees.

“It takes time,” he said after a team event Sept. 15.

Food literacy curriculum on the menu

Maggie Macintosh 5 minute read Yesterday at 2:01 AM CDT

Manitoba has a new recipe for health class and “food literacy” is a key ingredient.

The in-class portion of phys-ed has historically involved lessons about puberty, the risks of consuming drugs and dissecting Canada’s food guide.

A new pilot program asks teachers to expand their nutrition units and include in-depth discussions about how everything from diet culture to food insecurity affects eating habits.

“This is really moving beyond a conception of food as only fuel, where you just boil down food to its calories, its vitamins,” said Sarah Elvins, a food historian at the University of Manitoba who researches popular culture and marketing.
