MOON ALERT: Avoid shopping (except food and gas) and important decisions after 5:45 a.m. The moon is in Virgo.

ARIES (March 21-April 19)

This is an excellent day to make plans about your domestic needs as well as social occasions, vacations and matters related to kids. You can accomplish a lot at work because you have the mental energy to get things done. This is a work-hard/party-hard day.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20)

You’ve been focused on home, family and real estate, but now it’s the perfect day to goof off and have fun. Sports, fun outings, playful activities with kids and romance are beautifully favoured. Some of you might be involved in a work-related flirtation or budding love affair.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20)

This is a fast-paced week. You might need a breather. Put yourself first. Set aside some time to relax and put things in perspective. However, romance-related discussions and flirtations will take place for many of you. It’s a great day to shmooz.

CANCER (June 21-July 22)

With Mars still in your sign, you have lots of energy and drive. Furthermore, Mercury in your money house could trigger moneymaking ideas or attractive purchases, especially beautiful things such as clothing, jewelry and art.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22)

This is a marvellous day to give a lecture, talk or shmooz with others because Mercury is in your sign dancing with fair Venus, which is sweetens your words and makes you entertaining, charming and diplomatic. Keep an eye on your money and possessions and be alert for something unexpected.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)

This is a restless day for you. Nevertheless, your ruler Mercury is dancing beautifully with fair Venus and the moon in your sign is energized by Mars. Having said this, be on the lookout for surprise dealings with authority figures — bosses, parents, teachers, VIPs and the police.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)

This is an excellent day to make choices, especially about your romantic life. You might hang out with younger people. It’s certainly a popular day for you. You’re also ambitious to achieve something. (Good day to shop for wardrobe treasures.)

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)

You continue to make a great impression on everyone this week because the sun, Mercury and Jupiter are all at the top of your chart. Quite likely, people will ask for your advice or assistance with something. Interactions with groups and friends will be energized — perhaps competitive.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)

You’re high-viz and people can see you mean business. In fact, this puts you in a good position to direct the affairs of others and make decisions. It’s also a great day to study, make travel plans and explore avenues in publishing, the media, medicine or the law.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)

Do something different because you feel the need for adventure. Shake things up a little. Travel plans will appeal. In fact, a lively discussion with a friend, spouse or partner might generate adventurous ideas. You might raise money or get a loan.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)

Enjoy conversations with members of the general public as well as spouses, partners and close friends. Travel plans and political ideas might appeal. Banking and shared property could yield unusual ideas or surprises. Remember to get more rest.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20)

Be accommodating with others because they will be grateful. It’s a great day to socialize. Flirtations will appeal. In fact, new love or discussions about romance are highly likely. Something unexpected might interrupt your home routine.

TODAY’S BIRTHDAY

Actor John Slattery (1962) shares your birthday. You’re original, practical and innovative. You have revolutionary ideas about society and you’re fuelled by your desire to benefit others. This is a year of work and construction. You will build foundations externally and internally. Take charge of your health. Simplicity is key. Stay grounded and levelheaded.

Plasma clinic pauses operations in Canada amid ‘unfounded attention’

Free Press staff 2 minute read 5:11 PM CDT

A plasma collection company is pausing operations in Canada due to ‘unfounded attention’ after two people died following donations at Winnipeg clinics.

Grifols said in a statement Thursday it has “proactively and voluntarily decided to pause plasma collection activities at all its plasma donation centres in Canada,” citing “unfounded attention that has been focused on compensated plasma collection.”

The for-profit donation company came under public criticism after Health Canada investigated the deaths of two people who died after giving plasma in October 2025 and in January. The federal regulator determined the deaths were unrelated to plasma donations.

An interview request with a representative from Grifols was not accommodated.

Spotty service, U.S. roaming charges leave Somerset woman calling for answers

Nicole Buffie 5 minute read Yesterday at 5:37 PM CDT

A southwestern Manitoba woman is voicing her concerns about cell service in the area after she was billed more than $100 in U.S. roaming charges despite never leaving her community.

Teresa Acheson received a notification on her phone Monday at about 7:30 a.m. saying she had entered the United States and would be charged $13 per day for unlimited calls and text messages.

The only problem is that she was not in the U.S. She was lying in bed at her home near Somerset, some 50 kilometres away from the U.S. border.

“People have said to watch if you’re driving close to the border because you’ll get dinged, but I was sitting at home,” she said Wednesday.

The scoop on lawn bowling

The scoop on lawn bowling

Grace Penner 3 minute read 5:03 PM CDT

If you’ve ever wondered what bowls — better known as lawn bowling — is all about, the Free Press has the scoop on it.

First off, to get you in the right headspace it’s important to not compare bowls to alley bowling. Although there is a ball that is rolled, there are no pins at the end to knock down. Bowls is better compared to curling and bocce ball.

The game is played on a turf known as a rink. The rink can be made of grass — a bowling green — or carpet.

Both types of rinks have advantages and disadvantages, with players usually having a preference. With grass turf, bowlers need more force while rolling the ball to make it through the thicker terrain, while carpet is a smooth surface and requires a lighter touch.

Blue Bombers return with Collaros at the controls

Taylor Allen 6 minute read 5:22 PM CDT

There are worse places the Winnipeg Blue Bombers could be than 4-4.

But if they want to stay at or above .500, they can’t play anything like they have in their previous two outings, in which they’ve been outscored 87-49. Their latest setback was a 35-19 loss to the B.C. Lions on July 30.

“Everybody wants to win every single game in our locker room so I think we can empathize with people’s frustration,” said quarterback Zach Collaros after Thursday’s walkthrough at Princess Auto Stadium.

The Bombers have a glorious opportunity to get back on track when they host the lowly, winless Ottawa Redblacks (0-8) for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff on Friday night. The Redblacks dropped a 42-20 road result against the Saskatchewan Roughriders last week.

Winnipeg couple feels flush after highway porta-potty scare

Nicole Buffie 2 minute read Tuesday, Aug. 11, 2026

Talk about a crappy situation.

Two Winnipeg seniors were driving on the Trans-Canada Highway Monday afternoon when they collided with an unlikely projectile: a porta-potty.

Ed and Helen Toews were driving to their cottage in Sioux Narrows from Kenora, Ont., when a portable toilet came loose from the bed of a passing truck and launched into their car.

Ed Toews, 87, was sitting in the passenger seat when a flash of green came into his line of sight.

‘Disrespectful’: residents frustrated after Wyatt arrives hour late to committee meeting

Joyanne Pursaga 3 minute read 4:37 PM CDT

Several Winnipeggers attending a city development hearing on Thursday expressed frustration that one councillor arrived about an hour late, delaying the matter from being heard.

Coun. Russ Wyatt, who continues to attend city hall while facing criminal charges, began participating in the 9:30 a.m. East Kildonan-Transcona community committee meeting at 10:35 a.m.

A resident who hoped to speak at the meeting about a development plan in south Transcona noted the tardiness led the committee to bump the topic down on its agenda, while dozens waited to speak on it.

Christina Pyra eventually opted to leave city hall instead of waiting for her turn to make a presentation, to avoid missing a work commitment.
