ARIES (March 21-April 19)

This is a solid day for you because you’re motivated to work and accomplish something. (This is half the battle. Motivation is everything.) Roll up your sleeves and dig in. Talk to co-workers and friends. Be of service if you can.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20)

The moon will move into your fellow earth sign, which will encourage a more lighthearted approach to life. Enjoy socializing with others. Explore romance. Your involvement with sports and the company of children will be rewarding.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20)

You have lots of mental energy, which is why you want to share your ideas and information with someone. As the day wears on, home and family discussions will become more important.

CANCER (June 21-July 22)

For a large part of this day, the moon is in your money house. During the moon alert, be smart and restrict your spending to food and gas. If you want to buy something, fill your databank and do your research — then act once the moon alert is over.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22)

The day holds the promise of fun socializing and romantic escapades. Reach out to someone you care about. Keep things light and enjoy talking with someone. After the moon alert is over, cash flow, shopping and finances will be on your mind.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)

This day has a vague, dreamy quality until the moon alert is over. (See above.) However, once the moon moves into your sign to join the sun and Mercury — it’s all systems go! Go do that voodoo that you do so well.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)

You’re a social person, which is why you need others in your life. This day begins with a strong desire to talk to others or be involved in groups. However, after the moon alert, you need some peace and quiet. Treat yourself to solitude in beautiful surroundings.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)

For the first part of this day, you’re high-viz. People notice you more than usual. You might have to do some damage control — keep this in mind. After the moon alert, make an effort to talk to a friend or get involved with a group, because this will be rewarding.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)

Initially, you might feel a strong sense of escape. You might want to run away and join the circus. You want to do something different! Take it easy, especially because this feeling will simmer during the moon alert, which makes you feel a bit rudderless. Later in the day, you’re high-viz!

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)

Postpone important financial negotiations or banking decisions until the moon alert is over. Initially, you can do your research and get your facts. But wait until you’re on solid ground to act. Welcome any opportunity to travel, learn and explore your world.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)

This morning you have to co-operate with others, which means you might have to go more than halfway. (It’s not a big deal.) However, after the moon alert, you might make progress tying up loose ends and dealing with red-tape matters related to shared property and banking.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20)

Go along to get along, especially at work. Do what you can. After the moon alert, the moon will be opposite your sign, which means you have to be co-operative. Just take baby steps. Make no demands on yourself or on others. Easy does it.

TODAY’S BIRTHDAY

Actor, comedian Adam Sandler (1966) shares your birthday. You’re inquisitive, nurturing and responsible. You’re also resourceful, organized and innovative. It’s time for new beginnings, adventures and major changes in your life. Keep your eyes open for new opportunities and be ready to act. Prepare for leadership. What you do now will bring great benefit in the future.

Labour board ruling halts Dynacare strike

Carol Sanders and Erik Pindera 6 minute read Tuesday, Sep. 8, 2026

The Manitoba Labour Board has cut short a strike by 350 lab workers employed by Dynacare who administer blood and urine tests for patients in Winnipeg, Brandon and surrounding communities.

The board ruled late Tuesday afternoon that the workers, who hit the picket line at 6 a.m., must return to work Wednesday.

Jason Linklater, president of their union, the Manitoba Association of Health Care Professionals, slammed the board’s decision.

“The Manitoba Labour Board is doing exactly what the government asked them to do: they are taking away our members’ right to fight for fairness,” he said in a statement.

Ferraro, Skinner getting lay of the land before training camp starts

Mike McIntyre 8 minute read Yesterday at 5:45 PM CDT

They’ve both been around the NHL block a bit, but make no mistake, Stuart Skinner and Mario Ferraro are experiencing some “new kid at school” type jitters this week.

The pair were prized July 1 free agent signings by the Winnipeg Jets and are now quickly trying to get the lay of the land — from teammates and systems and structure to restaurants, schools and the best routes to the rink — in what is a frantic time on both a professional and personal level.

“It’s a big change, right?” Ferraro said Wednesday following a pre-training camp skate at the Hockey For All Centre.

“Like moving cities, getting settled somewhere else, with my family, my wife, my daughter, our two dogs. But I think it’s gone really well and smooth. We found a great place here, and we’re really happy with where we’re living.”

U of M students call for ban on far-right group

Maggie Macintosh 4 minute read 6:00 AM CDT

Some University of Manitoba students are calling on their school to ban a far-right group from campus after posters promoting mass deportations were found during the summer break.

More than 50 people rallied on Wednesday, the first day of classes, to make known their concerns about a group called the Dominion Society of Canada.

The protest was organized after a supporter of the self-described nationalist group posted a video over the Labour Day weekend that shows him putting up flyers in Fort Garry.

“Canada is a really beautiful country and I have been welcomed here by a lot of beautiful people and it’s been amazing, but when I see harmful rhetoric online and now, on campus, it gives me a lot of anxiety,” said Ela Ancheta, an arts major at U of M.

Cultivating compassion in young people

Jordan Laidlaw 5 minute read 2:00 AM CDT

We live in the unenviable era of rising American imperialism and the emergence of a precarious new world order.

As U.S. President Donald Trump escalates his annexation threats over Canada, Greenland and Venezuela; deteriorates decades-long relations with NATO; and offers concessions to totalitarian North Korea; we must remain steadfast and vigilantly united against these ominous — and markedly unusual — sociopolitical developments.

We have so much to learn from our past. As historical patterns suggest, these threats are not idle nor mere political rhetoric. Rather, these threats should be treated with utmost seriousness. As Winston Churchill so famously uttered, “Those that fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it.”

As a Canadian public educator, I hold the vehement conviction that we need to instruct our youth on the societal dangers of imperialism, while simultaneously exploring the “contentious” concepts of sharing and acceptance.
