TAURUS (April 20-May 20)

Financial discussions, especially related to home, family and real estate, will go well. This is a wonderful day to get a loan or mortgage or to explore new aspects of dealing with shared property or anything jointly overseen — including inheritances. You’re in the zone!

GEMINI (May 21-June 20)

This is an excellent time for important discussions with partners, spouses and close friends because you’ll be generous, fair-minded and upbeat. But at the same time, you’ll be realistic and grounded. Plans made will have a good chance for success tomorrow.

CANCER (June 21-July 22)

The day promises success and productivity for you. Work hard, because not only will you impress bosses and people in authority, you can do something to boost your income now or in the future. Work-related travel might occur for some of you. Go after what you want!

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22)

A lucky day for you! The moon is in your “home” dancing beautifully with Jupiter in your sign, and also with stern Saturn, which favours all kinds of ventures including business, publishing, higher education, medicine and the law as well as doing what is important to you. Sweet!

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)

Relax at home if you can, because you might find it rewarding to explore personal issues as well as your spiritual life. You will feel content. Nevertheless, a serious discussion with an older family member about debt and shared property might take place. (It’s all good.)

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)

Your communication skills are great (which is nothing new). Short trips, visits with siblings, relatives and neighbours, and a chance to learn or teach will please you. Activities with groups and friends will delight. Nevertheless, a serious discussion with a partner or spouse will be productive.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)

This is a good money day for you. For example, it’s a good time to ask for a raise or promotion. You’ll impress co-workers and bosses because not only are you hard-working and productive right now, you’re also diplomatic and charming. Go for the gold!

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)

You are blessed because the moon is in your sign dancing beautifully with both Jupiter and Saturn, which gives you a wonderful sense of balance whether at work or play. Explore chances to travel, and jump at opportunities in publishing, the media, medicine or the law.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)

Remember to be patient with partners and close friends while fiery Mars is opposite your sign. Travel opportunities and a chance to explore avenues in publishing, medicine and the law are favourable. Likewise, relations with friends and groups are cosy. Negotiations will favour you.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)

Your communication skills are great, which is why you’ll enjoy shmoozing with friends and groups. Likewise, talking to members of the general public will also be successful. You have a nice balance between optimism and grounded common sense.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20)

You’re high-viz, which means people notice you more than usual. But this is good news, because you make a fabulous impression on co-workers as well as anyone who holds the purse strings. Travel and a chance to meet someone different will appeal.

TODAY’S BIRTHDAY

Actor Kyle Chandler (1965) shares your birthday. You’re decisive, progressive and forceful. You will let nothing stand in your way. This is a year of completion and endings. Take inventory of your life, and let go of the people, places and things holding you back. Do some internal and external housecleaning. Focus on being compassionate and loving.

Canada-U.S. trade relationship is broken, but the damage can — and will — be repaired

Tom Brodbeck 5 minute read Yesterday at 1:35 PM CDT

Canada needs to get serious about diversifying its trade beyond the United States. But at the same time, Canadians should expect relations with the U.S. to normalize after Donald Trump is no longer in the White House.

For generations, Canada-U.S. trade was considered almost a fact of geography. The two countries share the world’s longest undefended border, deeply integrated supply chains and a century of commercial relationships.

Canadian manufacturers depend on American customers. American manufacturers depend on Canadian suppliers. Energy, agriculture, automotive production and countless other industries operate across the border as though it barely exists.

That isn’t going to change dramatically, even in the midst of a bitter trade war unleashed by the U.S. president.

‘A new future’: city dentist Cholakis donates $2M to school of dental hygiene

Melissa Martin 3 minute read Updated: Yesterday at 3:25 PM CDT

Dental hygienist training in Manitoba is getting a big boost, after a major gift from a local dentist.

On Thursday, the dental hygiene school at the University of Manitoba’s Dr. Gerald Niznick College of Dentistry unveiled a new $2-million donation from Dr. Ernest Cholakis. It’s the largest gift the program has ever received, and in honour of the funding, the school will be named the Cholakis School of Dental Hygiene.

The gift was unveiled at a ceremony Thursday morning at the U of M’s Brodie Centre in the Health Sciences Centre complex. The benefactor and other dignitaries, including Premier Wab Kinew, were in attendance, as well as the three-year program’s current students.

Cholakis, who graduated from the U of M’s dentistry school in 1982, had high praise for the dental hygiene profession.

Jets vets weigh in on franchise goalie Hellebuyck not reporting to training camp

Mike McIntyre 7 minute read Yesterday at 6:35 PM CDT

Hockey is the ultimate team sport, where it’s supposed to be about the crest on your chest rather than the name on your back.

So how is Connor Hellebuyck’s trade request and subsequent training camp strike playing out inside the Winnipeg Jets locker room — particularly among other core players he’s gone to battle with over the years?

“Obviously the news is heartbreaking,” Jets forward Kyle Connor said Thursday.

“It feels like we had such a special group here and for whatever reason — I can’t speak to the reason until we hear from the man, I’m not going to speculate on what it is but I know that a lot of guys in that room that are heartbroken.”

Siloam Mission, WFPS discussing on-site paramedic to reduce staggering number of emergency calls

Scott Billeck 4 minute read 2:00 AM CDT

Winnipeg’s fire-paramedic service and its largest homeless-serving organization are discussing what it would look like to station at least one paramedic at Siloam Mission, as emergency calls to the downtown facility surge.

The ongoing discussions come as Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service crews were dispatched 1,771 times during the first eight months of the year to the two adjacent Siloam properties at 303 Stanley St. and 300 Princess St.

WFPS said most of the calls were related to overdoses or other consequences of substance use, with the total nearly double the 854 calls recorded over the same period last year. By comparison, there were 831 calls during the same span in 2024, and 591 in 2023.

“The number of emergency calls isn’t sustainable for us as a service, but it’s certainly not sustainable for them as an agency trying to provide services,” WFPS chief Ryan Sneath told the Free Press. “And they recognize that they’re impacting emergency services, not them specifically, but the site in a significant way.”

Manitoba abandoning spring, fall clock changes

Carol Sanders 8 minute read Updated: 8:48 AM CDT

Time’s up for the time change in Manitoba.

Manitobans won’t be setting their clocks back an hour in November. The province has decided to permanently stay on daylight time after surveying residents on the twice annual clock adjustment.

“We heard from Manitobans loud and clear — no more changing the clocks in Manitoba,” Premier Wab Kinew said in a news release Thursday.

Most of the 72,000 votes submitted in an online EngageMB survey — 92 per cent — said they would like to see the practice end. The survey asked if they preferred earlier sunrises in winter with standard time or the later sunsets in summer with daylight time. More than half of survey participants (58 per cent) indicated a preference to stay on permanent daylight time; 34 per cent voted to eliminate the time change but stay on standard time.
