MOON ALERT: There are no restrictions to shopping or important decisions today. The moon is in Aquarius.

ARIES (March 21-April 19)

Very likely, you’ll find friends and members of groups have strong opinions. Nevertheless, listen to the advice of someone older or more experienced as unpredictable events might occur, and their advice could be practical. Stay light on your feet!

TAURUS (April 20-May 20)

Do not contradict authority figures — parents, bosses, VIPs or the police — because people will be pushy. Keep an eye on your bank account and anything to do with earnings and possessions because something unexpected could impact them. You snooze; you lose.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20)

This is a powerful day! You have strong opinions about travel, politics, religion, racial issues, and medical and legal matters. With the help of a friend, you will speak with authority as you’ve done your research. Travel plans might suddenly change.

CANCER (June 21-July 22)

Double-check banking details and anything to do with loans, mortgages, shared property, inheritances and taxes as something unexpected might arise. People will have heated feelings about whatever occurs. Fortunately, someone with authority will prevail with practical ideas.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22)

A heated discussion with a partner or close friend might take place as people have strong opinions. Meanwhile, a friend or member of a group might throw you a curveball? With Mars in your sign, you’re not going to sit back and take anything that comes your way. You will react!

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)

Strong discussions about your health, a pet or something related to your job might take place. Financial and practical support is there for you; however, someone in authority might surprise you. They might be forthcoming or they might put the brakes on your plans?

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)

Parents should be extra-vigilant to avoid accidents with their kids. Meanwhile, social plans might suddenly change. You might also entertain someone older or more experienced out of a sense of social obligation. (With the sun in your sign, you’re strong and composed.)

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)

Your home routine might be interrupted. Be smart and stock the fridge because people are happier with food in front of them. You might be more involved with an older family member. Support or lack of it from another source might be a surprise. Stay chill.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)

Pay attention to everything you say and do because this is an accident-prone day for you. Think before you speak. You might have increased responsibilities with children. On the upside, you might also have some clever brilliant ideas? (One can only hope.)

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)

Keep an eye on your money and possessions as something unexpected could impact them. This might even apply to your job. On the upside, someone older or more experienced might offer you helpful advice. (Old friends and prior contacts with groups are back.)

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)

The moon is in your sign giving you lots of energy as it’s supported by stern Saturn. You will work diligently to achieve what you want. However, social plans might suddenly change? Parents should know this could be an accident-prone day for kids, so be vigilant!

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20)

This is a restless day for you. You have the feeling you’re waiting for the other shoe to drop. Meanwhile, past opportunities related to publishing, higher education and travel might resurface in your life for some reason? Even a romantic interest with someone afar or from another culture? (Most curious.)

TODAY’S BIRTHDAY

Actor Michael Gambon (1940-2023) shares your birthday. You’re independent, free-spirited and complex. You appreciate beauty in simple things. You’re a fearless peace lover. This year your creativity and zest for life are at a pinnacle! Nurture the happiness and beauty you have within. Let your guard down and loosen up a bit. Have fun, but remember your goals.

Winnipeg business closure scare leads Hydro to reschedule planned outage

Free Press staff 2 minute read Wednesday, Oct. 21, 2026

Manitoba Hydro has cancelled a planned River Heights neighbourhood outage after a miscommunication led to area businesses fearing unexpected closure.

Hydro had planned to shut down power along Lanark and Renfrew streets between Corydon Avenue and John Brebeuf Place on Friday.

Overhead electrical maintenance work can only be done with the power off, during the day, for safety reasons, Hydro spokesman Peter Chura said. It chose Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. because St. John Brebeuf School had an in-service day.

However, the affected area houses a strip of businesses including a Royal Bank of Canada, eateries, shops, services such as physiotherapy and a medical centre.

Chief medical officer quits, cites work environment ‘challenges’

Manitoba’s provincial chief medical officer is resigning from his position at Shared Health, citing the role’s demands and work environment challenges in an email viewed by the Free Press.

Dr. José François, who’s held the executive position since April 2024, sent an email to provincial medical specialty leads that said his final day will be Jan. 17, 2027, after he submitted his resignation Wednesday. Several other senior leaders have departed the provincial health authority in recent months.

“Serving in this role has been a privilege,” François, a longtime family physician from Ste. Anne, wrote in the email.

He said his “greatest pleasure” was working alongside and supporting an “exceptional group” of provincial medical specialty leads and chief medical officers.

Outbreak should never have happened

Editorial 3 minute read Yesterday at 2:00 AM CDT

The headline offered a vague sense that something had been accomplished, but it most certainly did not describe anything worth celebrating:

“Manitoba declares measles outbreak over.”

The news item in the Oct. 17 Free Press noted provincial public health officials had confirmed Manitoba’s last laboratory-confirmed case of measles was identified in August, and that the absence of any new cases since had allowed for the aforementioned declaration.

The end of the outbreak — which began in February 2025 and included a significant stretch this year during which Manitoba experienced more measles cases than any other province — is certainly worth noting. But it bears reminding that the real story here is that this province, and others across Canada, experienced a resurgence of this highly communicable but successfully eradicated disease in the first place.

Winnipegger soprano, Iranian composer exhibit tremendous talent at WSO show

The Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra launched its newly renamed Thursday night series, Symphonic Sessions, by showcasing one of the world’s finest sopranos hailing from our fair city, Andriana Chuchman.

The 75-minute concert (sans intermission), titled Berlioz’s Les Nuits d’été and Schubert’s Symphony No. 4, also featured the auspicious Canadian debut of Iranian conductor Hossein Pishkar, who led the program ranging from lush lyricism to tempestuous Sturm und Drang for a small audience of 660.

Chuchman’s artistry just seems to grow more luminous with each passing year, as the Ukrainian-Canadian singer continues to light up stages throughout North America and in Europe.

Her eagerly anticipated concert performances include shows at Ottawa’s National Arts Centre, the National Symphony at Kennedy Center and Lincoln Center’s White Lights Festival, to name a few, as well as appearances with the Manitoba Chamber Orchestra and, particularly near and dear to the singer’s heart, Winnipeg’s Hoosli Ukrainian Male Chorus.
