SOREL-TRACY, Que. — Ontario’s Rachel Homan and Manitoba’s Alex Forrest continue to set the pace at the M&M Meat Shops Canadian junior curling championships.
Homan rallied Monday morning to beat Manitoba’s Breanne Meakin 6-4 in the morning draw. Meakin led 4-3 heading into the 10th end, but Homan scored three in the 10th to seal the win.
She capped the day with a 8-4 win over New Brunswick’s Jessica Daigle, to move to 5-0 and stay in first place on the women’s side. Homan took command of the match scoring three in the fourth and stealing two in the fifth.
Meakin bounced back later, scoring deuces in the sixth, eighth and 10th ends in a 9-6 win over Newfoundland and Labrador’s Jen Cunningham that moved Manitoba to 2-2.
Northern Ontario’s Kendra Lilly is hot on Homan’s heals with a 4-1 record. Lilly scored six in the first end and beat Amanda Moizis of the Northwest Territories 16-2.
Saskatchewan’s Trish Paulsen moved to 4-1 Monday afternoon with a 11-8 win over British Columbia’s Dailene Sivertson. Paulsen opened the game with a steal of three in the second, but Sivertson appeared to take control with a steal of four in the sixth. Paulsen scored the winning three points with the hammer in the 10th.
Sivertson, Meakin and Alberta’s Nadine Chyz all have two losses.
On the men’s side, Forrest had wins over Ontario and Newfoundland and Labrador to move to 5-0.
In the morning draw, he needed an extra end to hand Ontario’s Jake Walker his first loss of the week. Forrest’s single point in the 11th end gave his team a 5-4 win. The Manitoba squad then defeated Kelly Schuh’s rink from Newfoundland 9-6 in the evening draw.
Walker rebounded in the evening draw, scoring four in the third and stealing another in the fourth in a 8-6 win over New Brunswick’s Josh Barry.
Joining Walker with one loss are Saskatchewan’s Braeden Moskowy and Alberta’s Brendan Bottcher.
B.C. and P.E.I. have two losses.
