SOREL-TRACY, Que. — Manitoba’s Alex Forrest has booked passage into Sunday’s men’s title game with a 10-2 record at the Canadian Junior Curling Championships, despite dropping his final round-robin game on Friday to Sakatchewan, 7-4.
Ontario’s Jake Walker finished second with a 9-3 record, and eliminated Brett Gallant, the defending champion from P.E.I. with an 8-3 win.
In women’s play, Ontario’s Rachel Homan blasted through her final draw to finish undefeated at 12-0 in the round-robin and has earned a direct berth into Sunday’s final.
Breanne Meakin of Manitoba finished 6-6 and out of the playoffs.
Homan’s rink obliterated Prince Edward Island 12-3 in the final draw Friday, counting three in the seventh and ninth ends to seal the rout. It has been more than 20 years since a women’s team has won the title after finishing with a perfect record. Manitoba’s Cathy Overton was the last, going 11-0 at the event in Winnipeg, in 1989.
Northern Ontario’s Kendra Lilly finished second (9-3) to advance to the semifinal today. Trish Paulsen (Saskatchewan), Nadine Chyz (Alberta) and Dailene Sivertson (British Columbia) finished in a three-way tie for third place, with 8-4 records, meaning there will be tiebreakers today.
