RON WESTCOTT and his team from the host Fort Rouge Curling club won the 2010 Manitoba Credit Union Masters Men’s Provincial Championship on Monday afternoon.

Westcott and his team of third Bob Jenion, second Bob Broughey and lead Gary Smith defeated Lawrie Hogg and his team from Stonewall 8-2 in six ends in the championship final game.

Westcott will now represent Manitoba at the 2010 Canadian Open Masters Championship in Saint John, N.B., March 28-April 2. Wescott’s team will be joined by the Elaine Jones team from St. Vital Curling Club, including third Anne Wright, second Pat Malanchuk and lead Ruth Wiebe, who qualified last week for nationals by winning the 2010 Manitoba Credit Union Masters Women’s Provincial Championship.

Westcott took a 4-0 lead in the second end with Hogg replying with two in the third. Westcott scored a single in the fourth and then had steals of one and two points in the fifth and sixth ends.

Westcott and his team qualified for the final game by defeating the Ken Davis team from Souris 4-1 in the 1 v.s 1 Page playoff. Hogg beat Davis 5-2 in the semifinal to qualify for the final game.

It is the first provincial title and first trip to nationals for Westcott, Jenion and Broughey. Smith won the provincial title in 2007 and went to nationals with Martin Bailey-Heather.
