Jones beats pants off Norway

SWIFT CURRENT, Sask. — The Norwegians might have come out with the colourful Twister pants — only to have Team Canada beat them off, so to speak.

Canada’s Jennifer Jones improved to a perfect 3-0 start at the Ford World Women’s Curling Championship Sunday night with a convincing 8-3 victory over Norway — who took their fashion cues from the Norwegian Olympic men’s team by wearing multi-coloured polka dotted pants. The men’s pants were more like Chinese checkers, however, and Sunday night’s contest lacked any colour between the sheets.

Jones’ St. Vital foursome — including third Cathy Overton-Clapham, second Jill Officer and lead Dawn Askin — jumped out to an early 4-0 lead and remained in full control against the Norwegians, who fell to 1-2.

After the obligatory discussion about the Norwegian’s attire – Jones likes the pants, “Anytime we’re talking about curling, it’s good.” – the Team Canada skipped digressed to talk about the results.

“I don’t think we were ever out of the game, but she had a couple shots for big ends,” Jones noted. “So it kind of went back and forth. But all and all we had a really good day. We played better than (Saturday) and we just want to get better as the week goes on.”

After earlier edging Switzerland 6-4 on the afternoon draw, Canada remains the only undefeated team in Swift Current, as veteran German skip Andrea Schopp, now 2-1, was trashed 10-4 by Denmark, who improved to 2-1.

The surprise of the Worlds to date continued to be the Chinese, led by skip Bingyu Wang, who were demolished 14-4 by Scotland to remain winless at 0-3. The Scots are now 2-1. Sweden (2-1) scored four in the 10th to edge Switzerland 7-6. The Swiss are 0-3. On Monday, the Canadians will first meet Latvia at 2:30 p.m./TSN, followed by a date with the Chinese at 8 p.m. (TSN).
