WINNIPEG — The Winnipeg Blue Bombers have made their first pick in the 2010 CFL Canadian College Draft, nabbing receiver Cory Watson to bolster their offensive weaponry.
Watson (6-2, 205, Concordia) was a projected first-rounder and labelled by TSN draft analyst Duane Forde as the toughest receiver available in the draft. He pulled in 52 receptions for 821 yards and six touchdowns last year for the Stingers.
The Bombers were scheduled to select sixth overall — it would have been just their third first-round selection since 2000 after picking Brendon LaBatte sixth overall in 2008 and Daaron McField second overall in 2000 — but traded it to the Edmonton Eskimos for the ninth and 22nd overall picks.
They used the ninth pick to select Watson then made another deal, this time with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, sliding out of the 22nd overall spot for the 28th pick and the rights to a neg list player, believed to be Washington State QB Alex Brink. With the 28th selection Winnipeg selected Queen’s linebacker Christopher Smith and in the 29th spot chose University of Calgary running back Anthony Woodson.
The last Bomber pick came in the sixth round, 45th overall, and the club grabbed Western defensive lineman Christopher Greaves
The Saskatchewan Roughriders, after making a deal with the Toronto Argonauts, moved up to the top spot to select Queen’s linebacker/defensive end Shomari Williams first overall. The Toronto Argonauts then selected Washington State offensive lineman Joe Eppele and Concordia linebacker Cory Greenwood third overall. With the fourth pick, the B.C. Lions grabbed Baylor University O-lineman Danny Watkins who is returning to school and is on the radar screen for next year’s NFL draft.
The Calgary Stampeders grabbed Guelph kicker Rob Maver fifth overall with the Eskimos using the pick they acquired from Winnipeg for Stanford defensive lineman Brian Bulcke sixth. The seventh and final pick of the first round (Hamilton surrendered their pick by using it to select Zac Carlson in the supplemental draft last year) went to the Montreal Alouettes, who chose Concordia O-lineman Kristian Matte.
