TUESDAY night’s downpour spoiled one heck of a pitchers duel at Canwest Park.
Goldeyes starter Stephen Flake struck out 10 of the 21 Kansas City T-Bones batters he faced, while T-Bones starter Andrew Cruse was throwing a one-hit masterpiece when the game was suspended due to rain with two outs in the top of the fifth inning and the T-Bones leading 3-0.
Flake was victimized by a horrendous call at second base in the first inning — K.C. centre fielder Keanon Simon was ruled safe by umpire Mark Hackelburg when replays showed he was out by several feet. The blown call, a subsequent error by Fish shortstop Wes Long, two walks and a hit batsman led to a three-run first inning for Kansas City and what looked like a long night for the Fish.
But Flake was brilliant after the first-inning gong show, striking out five consecutive batters at one point and matching Cruse — the Northern League’s leading pitcher — pitch for pitch.
The suspended game will be picked up at 6 p.m. tonight and immediately followed by a seven-inning game.
