DEAR MISS LONELYHEARTS: My girlfriend lives on an acreage outside of Winnipeg. Her place is protected by bush and people cannot see anything until they get right into the yard. She also has two dogs that bark to announce everyone's arrival. I just stayed my second weekend with her and she confessed she's a nudist, and since the weather was so lovely we should just strip off for the day.

DEAR MISS LONELYHEARTS: My girlfriend lives on an acreage outside of Winnipeg. Her place is protected by bush and people cannot see anything until they get right into the yard. She also has two dogs that bark to announce everyone’s arrival. I just stayed my second weekend with her and she confessed she’s a nudist, and since the weather was so lovely we should just strip off for the day.

Although I have had wild and crazy sex with this woman, this nude thing is a whole other ball game. Although I think both of us look great naked in the bedroom, I think we both look kind of weird walking around the yard, mowing the grass or bending over to feed the animals. I just want my jeans back! I don’t need a shirt really, but I just feel so overexposed and under-tanned. I don’t care if she does it alone, but I just don’t feel like playing the nudist role.

This morning took the cake. A buddy of mine and his girlfriend took a drive in the country and decided to drop in and see what we were up to. What we were doing was struggling into our clothes as they pulled up. They thought they caught us having sex, but my girlfriend said, “No, we’re nudists.” My buddy started pulling off his shirt and I said, “No, no, it’s OK. That’s just our thing when we’re alone.”

Actually, it’s not my thing, but the word got out fast — I got a few text messages that I could have done without. I think I could fall in love with this girl, but I don’t want to be a nudist. Any suggestions? — Feeling Exposed, Winnipeg

Dear Exposed: The buddies who are teasing you are jealous. They may not know that it’s uncomfortable for you to be totally nude in the yard. Tell the closest friend with a big mouth that it takes a little getting used to and it was a surprise for you, too. If you meet their mocking with sincerity and have a decent conversation about it, they’ll probably knock it off. Nudism without sex is not very sexual, but people who have never experienced nudism outside the bedroom think it’s risqué.

Hang in there for a few more weeks and see if it becomes normal and pleasurable to be out in the summer weather without clothes. You might like it, or you might hate it. It will take you at least a month to know if this can be a lifestyle for you. If not, and your girlfriend’s really committed to it, you’ll need to set her free to find somebody else who will enjoy it.

Dear Miss Lonelyhearts: I don’t know why my girlfriend’s flipping out. She had no business looking at my phone when I was in the bathroom. The volume was on, and I heard the sound it makes when you unlock it. She went to my text messages and saw the last 10 people I talked to. Half of them are my buddies and the other half — four or five — were some girls I’ve been talking to recently. She screamed, “I don’t talk to anyone but you, and you’re talking to half the girls I know!” I asked her what the problem was since they are some new friends. “They’re not your friends. I just introduced them to you,” she said. Has this girl got a jealousy problem or what? — Guilty of Nothing, St. Vital

Dear Guilty: How would you like it if you had taken her to the bar and she later flirted up a storm with four or five of your buddies on the phone? You would hate it! If you want to keep her, back off from her girlfriends. Flirting with her besties makes it impossible for her to trust you. If you really care about her, stay off the phone with the women she introduces you to.

Thousands affected by storm-related power outages

1 minute read Updated: Yesterday at 8:45 PM CDT

Thousands are still without power in Winnipeg after high winds and thunderstorms knocked out power lines Sunday.

About 4,000 Manitoba Hydro customers were still dealing with outages this morning after crews worked to restore power in the Westwood and River Heights areas, Hydro spokesman Peter Chura said. On Sunday, Hydro reported outages affecting approximately 6, 700 customers.

The high winds and heavy rain brought down trees and broke power poles, causing "very severe damage," in River Heights, one of the hardest-hit neighbourhoods, while some of the damage in the Westwood area appeared to be caused by lightning strikes, Chura said.

Thunderstorms rolled in at about 6 p.m. Sunday and brought heavy rain and high winds to some areas of the province. Winnipeg received about 35 mm of rain, while some areas got almost double that. More than 62 mm was recorded at The Forks and 68.8 mm was recorded at Portage Southport, according to Environment Canada.

Slow start but gritty play not enough in Bombers OT loss to Roughriders in Labour Day Classic

REGINA – Leave it to Brady Oliveira to succinctly describe that fine line between jubilation and the alternate.

In the aftermath of another Labour Day Classic that went down to the wire, Oliveira went through the joy of tying the game with no time left on the clock to the empty feeling that came moments later when the Saskatchewan Roughriders finished off a 32-26 victory on Sunday night before a raucous crowd of 34,352 at Mosaic Stadium.

“It’s terrible,” said Oliveira. “You just kind of feel all of the emotions. I’m pretty pissed right now. We were close, we were right there. We didn’t play our best football and we still gave ourselves a chance, which could be a silver lining.

“I don’t like to look at silver linings because the fact of the matter is we play this game to get positive results. We want to win the game and we didn’t win the game. So, I’m pissed.”

Dynacare workers on strike across Manitoba over wage dispute

Erik Pindera 4 minute read Updated: 11:32 AM CDT

Dynacare laboratory technicians and technologists are on strike after contract negotiations with the private company stalled Friday, bringing operations at all Manitoba locations to a halt.

The company, which conducts blood and other medical tests at 22 outlets in Winnipeg, Brandon and surrounding communities, is deadlocked in contract negotiations with the union that represents its 350 workers.

Jason Linklater, president of the Manitoba Association of Health Care Professionals, spoke to reporters at a picket line at a Dynacare facility on McPhillips Street Tuesday morning, where dozens of workers held signs and urged motorists to honk in support of the strike.

Linklater said the union remains open to “substantive talks” with the company.

Instead of apples, Emma Caronte is handing out lesson plans on local food history to Manitoba teachers this back-to-school season.

The undergraduate researcher spent her summer break creating a social studies unit that investigates food guide evolution, marketing tactics and how honey dill sauce became a pantry staple on the Prairies.

“I want students to develop a greater interest in food and what outside influences affect their choices and what we consider ‘healthy,’” said Caronte, a final-year education student at the University of Manitoba.

She is advertising her 112-page project as a user-friendly resource for classroom teachers and “a fun sub plan” targeted at Grade 6, 7, 8 and 9.

For Kyle Thompson, foam is where the heart is.

As a high school student at Winnipeg’s Transcona Collegiate, one of his classes required him to create a business plan. He was cleaning vehicles part-time at the Chamois Car Wash and Detail Centre, so he used the assignment to envision a car wash of his own — one with a Regent Avenue address.

Fast forward some 25 years later and that dream is a reality. Thompson is the co-owner and general manager at Flamingo Express Car Wash.

Located at 868 Regent Ave. West — east of the row of car dealerships that call the thoroughfare home and across the street from an Amazon distribution hub — Flamingo opened last month.
