MOON ALERT: Avoid shopping and important decisions from 9:30 a.m. until 5 p.m. The moon then moves from Aries into Taurus.

ARIES (March 21-April 19)

Today is a great day for family discussions because people are agreeable and open to seeing new ways of looking at things. In fact, they will easily see the other person’s point of view. However, it’s a poor time to agree to anything important during the moon alert. (See above.)

TAURUS (April 20-May 20)

You enjoy talking to others today. You also enjoy the beauty of your daily surroundings because you’re wearing rosy glasses. You’re more inclined to see the beauty and the creation of others. However, beware the restrictions of the moon alert.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20)

Today you’re tempted to buy beautiful things, especially if at museum shops, lovely boutiques and art galleries. This is because your appreciation of beauty is heightened. Not only that, you can see ways to make money today. Nevertheless, be aware of the moon alert (see above).

CANCER (June 21-July 22)

Conversations with others are stimulating and meaningful. It’s easy to see new dynamics and connections that you might have missed before. However, due to the restrictions of the moon alert (see above), be careful of what you agree to.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22)

It’s a lovely day. It’s the perfect day for personal introspection. (Let’s face it, you might watch daytime TV.) Essentially, you will appreciate being alive, and appreciate what you have. However, if shopping, check the moon alert (see above).

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)

Today you will see how fond you are of a friend. When I was 16, I had 50 best friends. But my father said, “If they can carve on your tombstone that you have one good friend, you’ll be lucky.” I scoffed. But years later, I understood.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)

You might be surprised at how easy it is to talk to authority figures today. Your words are smooth as butter. They are impressed, and so are you. The only downside is that during the moon alert it’s a poor time to agree to anything important.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)

You will appreciate the beauty of other cultures and the arts and crafts of other cultures, plus any scenic landscapes you encounter today. But, if you’re thinking of buying something, do be aware of the restrictions of the moon alert (see above).

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)

You feel generous to others today. You will welcome an opportunity to help anyone who is less fortunate than you. (Good for you. But, hey, you will get those karmic brownie points.) Nevertheless, don’t do anything important during the moon alert.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)

Conversations with partners and close friends will flow easily today because mutual affection is strong. There will be a mutual appreciation of each other as well. (Yes, it’s a mutual appreciation society.) However, avoid important decisions during the moon alert.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)

It might amaze you to see new relationships and interesting connections at work today. You feel warmhearted to co-workers and appreciate what they are doing and who they are in your life. Nevertheless, be aware of the restrictions of the moon alert when it comes to important decisions.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20)

Your appreciation for beauty is boundless today. This is the perfect day to visit museums, art galleries or flea markets where you can see the arts and crafts of other people. You will love what you discover. However, if buying anything, check the moon alert.

TODAY’S BIRTHDAY

Singer/actor Jennifer Lopez (1969) shares your birthday today. You respect the thoughts and feelings of others. You’re social, friendly and practical. This is a year of teaching and learning. You might learn something profound that sets you in a new direction that is crucial for your success next year. Start to explore meditation, yoga or any discipline that will help you get a better understanding of who you are.

City seeks to have Manwin suit tossed

Erik Pindera 3 minute read 6:00 AM CDT

The City of Winnipeg says the claims made by the owner of the Manwin Hotel, in a lawsuit filed after the dilapidated Main Street property was destroyed by fire this year, are baseless.

Lawyers for the city have filed papers that seek to have the suit by Akim Kambamba thrown out.

The suit, filed in the Court of King’s Bench in the spring, seeks $15 million, plus court costs, over the Jan. 14 fire in the vacant hotel at 655 Main St., which has since been demolished.

The company accused the city of breaching its duty to it and wrongfully evicting the tenants, who had been ordered out owing to numerous safety concerns last year.

Feasibility study planned for arena on former Kapyong Barracks site

A First Nations development group is hoping to pull in prospective sports teams with plans to build an arena in south Winnipeg.

The Treaty One Development Corp. is exploring the feasibility of a 6,000-person arena in Naawi-Oodena, the former Kapyong Barracks site, on the southeast side at Taylor Avenue and Kenaston Boulevard.

The hope is to give aspiring athletes a large space to practice, and possibly even bring a junior or professional sports team to Winnipeg, said chief development officer Cody Mercer, who listed the Western Hockey League or National Lacrosse League as examples.

“Not just working for Treaty One, but also in our membership of the seven communities, there’s a ton of athletes, and really we see that when they’re getting to that higher level of hockey or anything like that, they’re having to move away,” he said. “We thought this is an idea that we can try to bring (in) a team.”

Bombers-Ticats clash will be remembered for all the wrong reasons

Taylor Allen 7 minute read 6:01 PM CDT

There were no winners on Sunday night in Hamilton.

Sure, the end result saw the Winnipeg Blue Bombers improve to 2-2, but quarterback Zach Collaros went down in the process and the game will be remembered for all the wrong reasons.

A win is a win, but the only reason the Blue and Gold escaped with a 14-13 victory was because the Hamilton Tiger-Cats’ worst nightmare came true: superstar quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell was taken away in an ambulance in the third quarter after a sack left him with a serious ankle injury.

Then there’s the CFL, which had been heaped with praise for the excellent quarterback play across the board in the opening weeks, only for this to happen.

‘Senseless violence’: Man gets seven years for stabbing wife’s aunt to death

Erik Pindera 3 minute read 1:44 PM CDT

A Winnipeg man who fatally stabbed his wife’s aunt in the neck after she tried to calm a drug and alcohol-fuelled argument over $20 has been sent to prison for seven years.

Court of King’s Bench Justice Jeffrey Harris gave Dustin Swampy, 31, the sentence late last month for manslaughter in the May 2024 stabbing death of Rachel Muswagon, 37.

He had stood trial for second-degree murder but was instead convicted of the lesser offence.

“Mr. Swampy armed himself with a knife during a domestic dispute over $20 and used that knife against a defenceless victim who posed no risk of harm to Mr. Swampy,” wrote Harris in his sentencing decision.

Winnipeg’s Slurpee crown at risk from thirsty Calgarians

Tiago Resko 4 minute read 7:00 PM CDT

Winnipeggers’ love of Slurpees is legendary.

For 20 years running, the city has been 7-Eleven’s biggest Slurpee market in the world.

But another Canadian city could put Winnipeg’s crown at risk.

Calgary, the international convenience store chain’s second-largest market, is catching up in terms of Slurpee sales.

Businesses report ongoing struggle amid reduced walk-by traffic 1 year into Graham Avenue transit corridor rework

Gabrielle Piché 5 minute read Saturday, Jul. 4, 2026

Layoffs, squeezed profits, reduced hours and a downsizing have plagued Graham Avenue businesses in the year since buses were removed from the former Winnipeg Transit strip.

A convenience store along the road doubled its footprint two years ago. Now, it’s operating in half the space: a wall was built in the middle of the shop last month, creating room for a new tenant.

Across the street, bong seller Aluminum Sound has laid off two staff. It’s one of at least two companies to lessen its employee count following the Transit overhaul.

“You could fire a cannon down Graham Avenue a lot of the time and not have to worry about any casualties,” said Aimee Peake, owner of Bison Books.
