MOON ALERT: We have the all-lear today to shop and do business. The moon is in Leo.

ARIES (March 21-April 19)

This is a lovely playful day! It’s a great day to explore flirtations and romance. It’s also an excellent day to enjoy playful activities with kids along with sporting events, the arts and musical performances. You’re enthusiastic and up for anything!

TAURUS (April 20-May 20)

It’s Saturday and this is a popular time for you. Venus in your sign makes you ready to shmooz and entertain others. However, the moon is at the bottom of your chart urging you to relax at home and enjoy the company of family, especially female relatives. It’s your choice.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20)

Short trips, conversations with siblings, relatives and neighbours, shopping, writing and studying are all things that appeal to you today. Basically, you are eager to learn something new and explore the world around you. Enjoy new faces, new places and new ideas!

CANCER (June 21-July 22)

Today you will enjoy travel, study and the company of creative, artistic people. With Mars opposite your sign, you must be patient with those who are close to you. Today the moon will focus your attention on money, shopping and cash flow. Ka-ching!

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22)

Today the moon is in your sign, which gives you a great need to belong to your friends and loved ones. This is why you are more sensitive than usual to their moods and feelings. You might be more emotionally demanding today; and yet, you are also nurturing to others.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)

Solitude in beautiful surroundings will please you today if you get a chance to hide somewhere. In fact, it’s a great day to have a nap because you need more sleep this month. Nevertheless, both Venus and Mars will offer opportunities to play and travel.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)

Today your emotional contact with friends will be important to you, especially a female acquaintance. Quite likely, you will feel protective and supportive to this person. (You might even be jealous if they pay more attention to someone else.) Examine your goals today.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)

You want to help someone at work today or even indirectly through a boss? People notice you and in fact, they might be talking about you because personal details about your private life seem to be public. It happens. (This might be disconcerting because you are a private person.)

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)

Do something different today to shake things up a little because you want a bit of adventure and you want to learn something new. Basically, you want to expand your horizons so you feel you are getting more out of life! An interaction with a parent could be significant.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)

Your busy pace continues. Fortunately, with Mars in your sign, you have the energy to keep up this pace! Today you might have an intense, emotional experience. Even you might be surprised at your reaction to something. (Stay calm.)

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)

If you have conflict with someone close to you today, things will be more emotional and you might find it difficult to be detached or objective. Therefore, guard against knee-jerk reactions to others. (The reason for this is the moon opposite your sign today.) Ideally, you have to compromise with others.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20)

You continue to be empowered with the sun in your sign. Mars energizes your interactions with friends and groups, perhaps even competitive interactions? Meanwhile, the placement of the moon indicates you might have to put the needs of someone else before your own. (It’s a compromise.)

TODAY’S BIRTHDAY

Actress Rachel Weisz (1970) shares your birthday today. You are creative and compassionate. You care. You’re also psychic. Sometimes you need to protect yourself from those who are insensitive. This is a year of change and new opportunities! Expect to encounter adventure and stimulating situations. Grab every chance to travel and expand your world through learning new things. Embrace change! Let your personal freedom be your goal this year.

First wave of eligible students snap up more than 18,000 free annual Winnipeg Transit passes

Chris Kitching 5 minute read Updated: Yesterday at 9:20 PM CDT

More than 18,000 free Winnipeg Transit passes have been handed out to Grade 11 and 12 students so far as part of a provincial pilot program, the NDP government announced Thursday.

Schools started distributing annual youth passes (valid until Aug. 31, 2027) to those students this week, with children in grades 6 to 10 next in line as part of a staggered rollout.

“This youth pass can be used to get to school, to get to work, to visit your friends and, really, anything that you want to do,” Education Minister Tracy Schmidt told reporters at Grant Park High School Thursday.

City of Winnipeg spokesman David Driedger said 60,000 passes have been sent to schools. Winnipeg Transit initially planned for about 30,000 passes.

South Winnipeg neighbourhood will be first to go geothermal

Chris Kitching 4 minute read Wednesday, Sep. 9, 2026

A new neighbourhood in south Winnipeg will be Manitoba’s first to use a shared, large-scale geothermal system to heat and cool hundreds of homes over coming decades.

The province is giving up to $4 million to the developers of Southwood Circle, just north of the University of Manitoba’s Fort Garry campus, for a district geothermal system as part of the NDP’s goal to reach net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.

“It means a whole neighbourhood can tap into geothermal, which means low-carbon heating and cooling for at least 1,000 homes,” Premier Wab Kinew said at a news conference Wednesday.

Geothermal systems, equipped with pumps and pipes, use underground temperatures to heat and cool one or more buildings. Proponents point to long-term energy and cost savings compared with conventional heating and cooling systems.

‘We’ll get there’: retired sportscaster Scott Oake determined as fundraising for women's addictions treatment facility enters home stretch

Melissa Martin 4 minute read Yesterday at 7:08 PM CDT

For now, the patch of land just east of the Victoria Hospital doesn’t look like much: just a field of rocks, mounded dirt, and concrete piles driven into the earth. Yet when Scott Oake looks over the site, he can already imagine how it will look in just over a year’s time, when the new Anne Oake Family Recovery Centre is expected to open.

It’s easier to picture this time around. In 2020, when the recently-retired CBC sportscaster and his late wife, Anne, were building their first labour of intermingled grief and love, the Bruce Oake Recovery Centre for men, it was hard for him to wrap his mind around how a raw construction site could transform into a welcoming addictions treatment facility.

When that centre opened in 2021, Oake found it looked “almost identical” to the architect’s renderings. So it’s easy to hope the Anne Oake Centre will be the same. It will be the first facility of its kind, its founders believe, not only in Canada but in North America: a place where 50 to 70 women can pursue sobriety while staying with their children.

“At Bruce Oake there’s a culture of love, and most of all a culture of hope,” Oake said, speaking at the site Thursday after a media conference to announce the final push of the centre’s fundraising campaign. “I can feel it every time I walk into that building. And I know it will be the same here.”
