ARIES (March 21-April 19)

Be careful with financial matters today, especially dealing with taxes, debt, inheritances and insurance matters. For starters, you might have a knee-jerk reaction about something. However, you might also feel confused because of your sympathy for someone. Wait for clarity.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20)

Be patient with partners and close friends today because they might be emotionally upset about something. In fact, this could relate to an extravagant expenditure or a financial situation that is fuzzy or excessive. Make sure you have all the facts before you make a judgment. Take it easy.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20)

Be patient with work colleagues today because you might cross swords with someone, possibly because they’re excited about a situation or upset. Perhaps they’re trying to introduce improvements? Meanwhile, you might come from a totally different perspective; hence the confusion.

CANCER (June 21-July 22)

Lovers’ quarrels might erupt today. Likewise, parents might suddenly be upset with their kids; or your kids might have a hissy fit or a meltdown for some reason. Whatever the case, be patient, because there’s a strong element of confusion and wishful thinking today.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22)

Do what you can to keep the peace at home today, especially with female family members. Keep in mind that your sympathetic feelings for a friend or a member of a group might add to some confusion to whatever is happening today. Get your facts straight before you take sides.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)

This is a mildly accident-prone day for you simply because you might have an emotional reaction to something, which in turn, creates a distraction for you. Accidents don’t have to happen but you have to maintain your cool. When talking to authority figures, think twice before you speak.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)

Your desire to travel and learn is strong today. In fact, you have romantic notions about where you would like to go and what you would like to do. Meanwhile, do not be impulsive about how you spend your money today. Give everything a sober second thought.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)

This is a challenging day because the moon is in your sign square to your ruler Pluto, which can stifle your feelings. That doesn’t mean they go away; they’re still there. In fact, jealousy is likely. Be clear about how to handle the resources of others. Don’t give away the farm.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)

You feel sympathetic to friends, spouses and partners today. You might even feel a strong connection to someone who is a member of the public. (Your compassion is aroused.) Nevertheless, because this element of sympathetic confusion is present, tread carefully.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)

You don’t have to coerce a friend or a member of a group to agree with you today; however, you will be tempted to do do. Meanwhile, if you can help a co-worker, you will. Good. Never miss an opportunity to practise a kindness.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)

Discussions with parents, bosses, VIPs or the police might become heated today. Avoid this if you can, because what good will it serve? Meanwhile, romance is heightened today, even though there is a veil of confusion present. Because of this confusing element, be careful about going overboard.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20)

Avoid controversial subjects today because they will quickly disintegrate into a clash of wills. Meanwhile, you will feel sympathetic to a family member and look for ways to help or support them if you can. You might also enjoy redecorating where you live or tweaking your digs in some way.

TODAY’S BIRTHDAY

Actor Will Arnett (1970) shares your birthday today. You are charming, perceptive and affectionate. You are also calm, which is why others often seek out your help. When necessary, you are an excellent teacher. This is a year of teaching and learning for you and perhaps for more solitude. You will acquire more knowledge, as well as increased inner awareness.

Flammable gas culprit of 2024 Transcona home explosion: police

Malak Abas 2 minute read Yesterday at 4:45 PM CDT

Flammable gas is believed to be the cause of a 2024 house explosion in Transcona that damaged neighbouring homes and displaced residents.

“As a result of the investigation and upon Crown review, the explosion is believed to be an isolated incident,” Winnipeg Police Service Const. Dani McKinnon said in an email Friday afternoon.

“There are no public safety concerns connected to this incident, and no criminal charges have been laid.”

The sudden blast happened in a bungalow on Camrose Bay on June 26, 2024. It levelled the home and caused significant damage to 22 other houses. At the time, it was described as “catastrophic” by the fire chief at the scene.

How confusing; seems there’s more than one candidate in Hanover named Shayne Barkman

Dan Lett 5 minute read Thursday, Sep. 24, 2026

It’s not entirely clear when or why Hanover trustee Shayne Barkman became one of Manitoba’s best-known anti-LGBTTQ+ crusaders.

Back in 2022, when he ran as a candidate for Hanover school board for the first time, there was nary a hint that socially conservative culture wars were going to be a large part of his identity as an elected official.

In a Steinbach Online profile published before the 2022 municipal elections, Barkman highlighted his background as a successful farmer. He said he was entering politics to be a “listening ear” who could promote understanding.

“I would love to kind of just be a voice of reason amongst all the problems coming down the pipe,” Barkman said

U of W marks 10 years of Indigenous education requirement

Maggie Macintosh 5 minute read Yesterday at 2:00 AM CDT

The University of Winnipeg is collecting course outlines, historic concerns about systemic racism on campus and related records to mark the 10-year anniversary of mandating Indigenous studies.

The unveiling of a new archive drew nearly 200 people to Centennial Hall on Thursday afternoon to reflect on how the Indigenous course requirement, also known as “the ICR,” came to be.

University archivist Brett Lougheed told the crowd its inception is “an amazing story” of student activism that, until now, wasn’t accurately reflected in U of W records.

“What little material we had told the story of administration’s role in developing the ICR as though it was the ultimate driver… and not a student-led response to racism,” Lougheed said.

Positive anticipation is growing about major housing developments underway in Winnipeg’s downtown

Gabrielle Piché 10 minute read Yesterday at 6:00 AM CDT

If traffic is light and the wind is down, Somia Sadiq is able to hear the roar of Winnipeg Jets fans twice: first through her window, then on TV.

From her apartment view high above downtown, she can look out at Graham Avenue’s painted pedestrian landscape, see construction cranes and hear the heavy equipment at work as massive housing projects take shape at The Forks, at what used to be Portage Place shopping centre and at the former Hudson’s Bay building.

Sadiq has lived at 300 Main for 2 1/2 years, a few steps from the city’s famous, windy and reopened-to-pedestrians Portage Avenue intersection. At 42 storeys, it’s the tallest building in Winnipeg.

She is among 18,000 downtown residents who will soon be joined by thousands of others attracted to the city’s core by the new wave of major construction projects.
