ARIES (March 21-April 19)

This is a poor day for an important family discussion because your feelings will affect what you say — especially your logic. This is not to say your feelings don’t count, but if you’re discussing how to do something or how to address an issue, your feelings might cloud what’s important.

Fargo star Frances McDormand turns 69 today.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20)

Tread carefully when talking to siblings, relatives and neighbours because you might be over-excited about an idea and say something you later regret. There’s no doubt you’re eager to communicate — and forcefully with fiery Mars in your sign. Think before you speak.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20)

Be careful how you spend your money because you might be tempted go overboard shelling out on fun outings, entertaining diversions, your kids, sporting events or gifts. This is because it’s easy for you to get carried away in the moment.

CANCER (June 21-July 22)

You are a sensitive person — and you know this. (This is why you can be moody.) Both the sun and Mercury are in your sign; however, Mercury is at odds with the moon, which fuzzies your logic because your analytical abilities are flooded with feelings. A poor day for important decisions.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22)

With Mars high in your chart, your ambition is aroused. However, right now it’s in your best interests to think twice before you rally your forces or demand something. Fortunately, Venus will soften your approach and make you charming and diplomatic. Go gently.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)

Be circumspect in discussions with friends, groups and organizations because others might see you as too emotionally invested in what you’re saying. Ironically, with the sun in your house of friendships right now, you have sway with groups. Be careful and be precise.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)

You might talk to a boss, parent, police or someone in authority. It’s important to know what you say might be weakened — in their eyes — because you’re speaking from your feelings rather than logic. (You might have to censor yourself.)

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)

Avoid controversial topics because you might become so involved that your feelings overwhelm your rational intellect. Nevertheless, you have a strong need to communicate to others. Bottom line: steer clear of controversy because you might be in a state of flux.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)

Be cautious talking to friends and groups, especially in discussions about fundraising, joint costs and shared property because your feelings might cloud your clear thinking. Postpone important discussions for another day if possible.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)

People notice you. In fact, some will know personal details about your private life. Think twice before you say anything because you might be more emotional than usual, which will cause you to share something you might later regret. Forewarned is forearmed.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)

You want to travel or get a change of scenery. You might also be dealing with foreign countries, work-related travel or people from other cultures. Think before you speak, because your emotions might get you in trouble. Slow down and be clear.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20)

You might get involved in a discussion about shared costs relating to your kids, the price of a vacation or entertaining event or something to do with the arts. Whatever the case, this is a poor day to discuss money because your feelings are wrapped up with your ideas.

TODAY’S BIRTHDAY

Actress Frances McDormand (1957) shares your birthday. You are intuitive, helpful and sensitive. You want to make the world a better place. This year your creativity and zest for life are at a pinnacle. Nurture the happiness and beauty you have within. Let your guard down and loosen up a bit. Old friends might reappear.

Emergency responders overburdened

Editorial 4 minute read 2:00 AM CDT

The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service’s first comprehensive annual report offers an uncomfortable but necessary reality check. Winnipeg’s emergency responders are being asked to do more than ever, while the public is waiting longer than it should when every minute matters.

A record 136,198 incidents in 2025, including nearly 115,000 medical calls, reflects a system under relentless strain. Much of that pressure is being driven by the ongoing addictions crisis, which now generates roughly 27 emergency calls every day related to drugs or alcohol.

Opioid overdoses, alcohol intoxication and mental health emergencies have become routine parts of the workload for firefighters and paramedics, even as they continue responding to fires, traffic collisions and countless other emergencies.

The report should serve as a call to action for both city hall and the Manitoba government.

Feasibility study planned for arena on former Kapyong Barracks site

Malak Abas 3 minute read Sunday, Jul. 5, 2026

A First Nations development group is hoping to pull in prospective sports teams with plans to build an arena in south Winnipeg.

The Treaty One Development Corp. is exploring the feasibility of a 6,000-person arena in Naawi-Oodena, the former Kapyong Barracks site, on the southeast side at Taylor Avenue and Kenaston Boulevard.

The hope is to give aspiring athletes a large space to practice, and possibly even bring a junior or professional sports team to Winnipeg, said chief development officer Cody Mercer, who listed the Western Hockey League or National Lacrosse League as examples.

“Not just working for Treaty One, but also in our membership of the seven communities, there’s a ton of athletes, and really we see that when they’re getting to that higher level of hockey or anything like that, they’re having to move away,” he said. “We thought this is an idea that we can try to bring (in) a team.”

Transcona teen — and Nigerian royalty — earns high school diploma as queen mother beams with pride

Manitoba’s public school system is receiving high praise from a Nigerian king who sent his only son to Grade 12 in Transcona.

Prince Adetola Samuel Owoade — known as “Sam,” to friends and family — kept his royal title under wraps throughout his tenure at Transcona Collegiate.

It wasn’t until an end-of-year ceremony that many of Sam’s peers and their families learned nobility was among the Class of 2026.

His Royal Majesty, Abimbola Owoade I, was unable to vacate his throne in southwestern Nigeria for the occasion, but he made his fatherly pride known.
