ARIES (March 21-April 19)

The day is a mixed bag. There are still fun opportunities to play and enjoy socializing with others. However, you might be sandbagged by someone who is critical or negative. Be careful with whom you choose to associate, because they might irk you. Focus on home repairs.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20)

Home and family are your primary focus right now. Unfortunately, discussions about money, kids, vacations and fun outings might trigger disputes or confrontations. Focus on discussions with siblings and relatives. Avoid negative people.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20)

You’re high-viz, which means people notice you more than usual. However, it’s easy to find yourself at odds with authority figures, parents, bosses and even the police. Even family members are not sympathetic. Find ways to entertain yourself.

CANCER (June 21-July 22)

Steer clear of controversial subjects because some people are just itching for a fight. Don’t let them find you. In fact, practically any discussion about daily matters could end up being a testy conversation, especially with siblings and relatives. (Run away! Run away!)

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22)

Despite your interest in cash flow, earnings and financial matters, do not discuss these issues with anyone else, especially if someone owes you money. People are too quick to criticize, complain and attack. It’s in the stars. Keep to yourself as much as possible.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)

Even though Venus is in your sign promoting diplomacy and charm, nevertheless, relations with partners, spouses and close friends as well as authority figures — parents, bosses and the police — are dicey! Seek solitude for your own peace of mind.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)

You like to keep the peace and you like happy, harmonious surroundings. However, people are too quick to be on each other’s cases, dispute issues and even criticize others. You don’t need this. Fortunately, relations with a friend or a group might be OK for you. Tread carefully.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)

This is a tough day for romance because people are in a bad mood and too quick to criticize. Your feelings might be quickly hurt. Or you might hurt someone else’s feelings? Furthermore, people will notice you. Do your best to be friendly and diplomatic. (For your own sake.)

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)

This is a poor day to approach authority figures — parents, bosses, teachers, VIPs and the police — to ask for permission or approval. Don’t do it. Likewise, discussions with partners, spouses and close friends might also be alienating. Find a comfortable place to hide with comfort food.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)

Issues with work colleagues might come to a head and create problems, because people are sensitive and also unnecessarily critical. It’s not good. Fortunately, you might find sympathy through a close friend, spouse or partner. Keep a low profile. Say as little as possible.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)

This is the perfect day for a nap. Unfortunately, romantic relationships are stressed and disappointing. Likewise, parents might find dealing with their kids to be a real challenge. Social occasions will likely disappoint. (Run for cover.)

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20)

Bury yourself in work, or escape somewhere, because your relations with family members, spouses, partners and people at home are challenged! Don’t expect co-operation or help from them. Instead, be sympathetic and understanding. Social outings, sports and activities with children might be excellent choices for you.

TODAY’S BIRTHDAY

Actor Sam Worthington (1976) shares your birthday. You are energetic and loyal. You’re also straightforward, incisive and logical. This is a slower-paced year. Take time to rejuvenate your energy. Focus on business and personal relationships and hang out with people who are kind and helpful. Focus on your needs and what brings you happiness.

‘Definitely a tough one’: Travel delays drag down Sea Bears in 114-90 loss to Vancouver Bandits

Joshua Frey-Sam 5 minute read Yesterday at 7:19 PM CDT

The Winnipeg Sea Bears will head into the playoffs on a disheartening note.

Winnipeg’s pro hoops squad had hoped to ride a wave of confidence into the Canadian Elite Basketball League post-season on the strength of locking up the top seed in the Western Conference.

Instead, the Sea Bears ended the regular season after being handed their worst defeat of the season, a 114-90 rout at the hands of the Vancouver Bandits at the Langley Events Centre in British Columbia on Sunday.

“Definitely a tough one, but we got a home game coming next week. Just get ready for that,” said Simon Hildebrandt, who was the only member of the Sea Bears available for a post-game interview.

Use summer’s hard truth to mend your heart

Maureen Scurfield 4 minute read 2:15 AM CDT

Dear Miss Lonelyhearts: I refused to go stay at my girlfriend’s cabin in July, because her alcoholic ex-husband still owns the lot beside her. He’s building a big fancy cabin this summer and she’s more than OK with that, even though they’re divorced.

I seriously criticized him — calling him a drunk and a loser — and she actually dumped me before she went off to the lake for all of July!

When she finally came back home I went to see her. She told me I “just wasn’t enough of a lake person” for her.

Then the fight began! I said, “So are you back with him permanently?” and she said, “What do you think? You let me go!”

240 WestJet flight attendants picket in Winnipeg

Malak Abas 6 minute read Updated: Yesterday at 3:21 PM CDT

Winnipeg’s WestJet flight attendants took to the picket line outside of Richardson International Airport on the first day of nationwide strikes Sunday, while inside, frustrated flyers scrambled to re-route cancelled long-weekend flights.

The Canadian Union of Public Employees’ Ontario arm and the airline announced the strike would commence after the strike deadline was passed without a deal early Sunday morning. WestJet attendants have been without a contract since Dec. 31, 2025.

Hours later, the 240 WestJet flight attendants based in Winnipeg had walked off the job and were marching outside of the airport terminal, some carrying signs with slogans including “Tired with WestJet? So are We!” and “Unpaid Work Won’t Fly.”

Key issues causing the stalemate are wages and pay for work on the ground: the union says flight attendants are not being paid for some of that work, while the company says they pay for the work through a “credit hour” system rather than an hourly rate.

Stampeding to Starlette’s

David Sanderson 7 minute read Saturday, Aug. 1, 2026

ELMA — Build it and they will come.

Lee and Star Giesbrecht are the owners of Starlette’s Burger Saloon, a western-themed, outdoor eating spot situated on the married couple’s 40-acre spread, immediately north of Elma.

Seated at one of a half-dozen picnic tables that dot the grounds, Star recalls a conversation she and Lee had prior to the May 2025 grand opening of their locale, which, with its weathered-wood exterior and rustic swinging doors, wouldn’t look out of place in an episode of Yellowstone.

Because they are “literally in the middle of nowhere,” Star says Lee thought it would be advantageous to mount a TV in one corner of the kitchen, for those occasions when they’d be twiddling their thumbs for hours on end, with little to do.

Pimicikamak Cree First Nation, also known as Cross Lake, remains under lockdown as RCMP Major Crime Services investigate a shooting that left a 42-year-old man dead.

RCMP said officers were notified by local First Nation Safety Officers at about 9:30 p.m. Friday about a seriously injured person on Main Road in the community. Officers found two males at the scene, including one with a gunshot wound.

The 42-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene by EMS. The second male was not injured and did not require medical attention, police said.

Manitoba RCMP Major Crime Services, along with Cross Lake RCMP and Forensic Identification Services, are investigating. Police said the suspect is believed to be known to the person shot and may still be in the community.

‘Good deal of synergy’ brewing in South Osborne

Gabrielle Piché 5 minute read Friday, Jul. 31, 2026

Pub crawls could become the next South Osborne draw.

At least, that’s the hope of entrepreneurs in the area as three breweries build out locations in the Winnipeg neighbourhood.

Nonsuch Brewing Co. and Good Neighbour Brewing Co. have opened storefronts along the strip in the past three months. Dastardly Villain is creating a taproom and nanobrewery.

“I’m really excited to have these pubs and taprooms,” said Ben Shantz, board chair of the South Osborne Business Improvement Zone.
