TAURUS (April 20-May 20)

This is a feel-good day! You’ll enjoy time spent alone in private moments or solitude because you’re sensitive to the problems of others. This will heighten your feelings of compassion and encourage you to be helpful to someone in need. Enjoy relaxing at home.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20)

You’re interested in the world! You want to know what’s going on and you want to talk to others. In particular, you might feel sympathetic toward a friend or group, which in turn might prompt you to become involved in a charitable organization. Your Spidey sense is also heightened.

CANCER (June 21-July 22)

People notice you. You can use this to your advantage if you want to set an example, especially one that is caring, compassionate and generous. You also feel confident about your finances. You might shop for something big!

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22)

Your desire to expand your world is strong. Not only are you interested in travel, you’re also interested in big ideas and making progress via medicine or the law in a way that benefits others. Because your idealism is aroused, you want to help people in need.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)

You’re happy to work alone or behind the scenes. Nevertheless, you might do some fundraising or use the wealth and resources of someone else to benefit others. With Mars high in your chart, your ambition is aroused. Plus, you’re interested in talking to younger people — perhaps to rally your troops?

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)

This is a popular day and you’re eager to shmooz, especially with members of the general public. You might have a strong connection with a partner, spouse or close friend. Your sympathies are aroused, perhaps for someone close to you.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)

You make a fabulous impression on others, which is something you can use if you want to persuade someone about something dear to your heart. This could be a charitable cause or something work-related or relevant to your health.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)

Do something different, because you’re keen for adventure! This is a marvellous day to shmooz. Accept invitations to socialize. Romantic interests and playful times with kids will delight. You feel particularly concerned about the welfare of children.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)

You might want to help a family member. You’re certainly sensitive to the needs of family members right now. You might research ways to get funding or help for someone who needs assistance. Personally, travel and a chance to do something different appeals to you.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)

You’re an idealist who is concerned about the welfare of society. You might be up on your proverbial soapbox or out there with petitions because you care about a cause. Your imagination is heightened, which promotes artistic fantasies.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20)

If you can do anything to help others, especially via your job, you will, because you feel sensitive to the concerns and problems of people around you. You might be personally generous with your own funds or look for ways to encourage others to be more altruistic.

‘Definitely a tough one’: Travel delays drag down Sea Bears in 114-90 loss to Vancouver Bandits

Joshua Frey-Sam 5 minute read Sunday, Aug. 2, 2026

The Winnipeg Sea Bears will head into the playoffs on a disheartening note.

Winnipeg’s pro hoops squad had hoped to ride a wave of confidence into the Canadian Elite Basketball League post-season on the strength of locking up the top seed in the Western Conference.

Instead, the Sea Bears ended the regular season after being handed their worst defeat of the season, a 114-90 rout at the hands of the Vancouver Bandits at the Langley Events Centre in British Columbia on Sunday.

“Definitely a tough one, but we got a home game coming next week. Just get ready for that,” said Simon Hildebrandt, who was the only member of the Sea Bears available for a post-game interview.

Giant Tiger decision creates giant void for desperate population

Niigaan Sinclair 5 minute read Friday, Jul. 31, 2026

A lot of Winnipeggers may shrug, but the end of Giant Tiger’s downtown store is a giant problem for many of the people living in the centre of the city.

It would have been difficult for anyone going into or passing by the Canadian discount chain’s Donald Street and Ellice Avenue location Thursday to miss the red notices posted on the store’s windows advising it will close on Nov. 7.

According to a 2024 Downtown Winnipeg BIZ report, about 18,000 people live in Winnipeg’s downtown.

More than 60,000 people work there, and some days — when there’s a big concert or the Jets play at Canada Life Centre, for example — the number of people spending time in the area increases significantly.

Western Warrior finishes strong

Mike McIntyre 5 minute read Yesterday at 11:32 PM CDT

The smile — not to mention the relief — on Dane Nelson’s face said it all.

“A perfect race,” declared the veteran jockey, moments after riding Western Warrior to a dramatic victory in the 78th running of the Manitoba Derby on Monday night at Assiniboia Downs.

Indeed it was for the morning line favourite (2-1), who actually had slipped to 8-1 (fifth-best) by post time. He sat sixth in the nine-horse field at the midway point of the one-and-one-eighth mile marathon and really turned it on and found his stride down the stretch.

Nelson expertly manoeuvered the three-year-old colt through traffic as they approached the final turn, moving from fifth to first in the blink of an eye. Western Warrior then held on as longshot Quarry (20-1 on the morning line) — who he’d just overtaken for the lead — had a frantic, final push and nearly passed him at the wire.

Hydro CEO needs to reckon with winds of change

Dan Lett 5 minute read Yesterday at 3:28 PM CDT

Methinks Hydro CEO Allan Danroth protests too much.

At a recent hearing in front of the Public Utilities Board, Danroth suggested Hydro’s plan to build a $3-billion natural-gas-powered generating plant near Brandon was being subjected to unfair criticism. The gas turbines are meant to bolster Hydro’s grid in the event that drought lowers output from hydro-generating stations.

After hearing submissions from interveners concerned about the gas-turbine plan, Danroth lashed out at the “constant, uninformed criticism” that has not only shaken trust in Hydro but also triggered threatening responses from the public.

Danroth said Hydro is monitoring “eight credible threats” against employees, five of which targeted the CEO himself. Although Danroth cited some specific incidents — employees being threatened with guns, and one where a homeowner set his dogs on a meter reader — he refused to elaborate on the circumstances.
