TAURUS (April 20-May 20)

An unexpected boon or favour might come to you from a surprising source. This could help you in your work or lead you to another job. You might suddenly get a boost to your health. An unexpected financial favour — cash or gift — might come to you as well.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20)

The day is full of surprises and electric energy. New romance might begin. A sudden introduction or acquaintance might make you sit up and listen. Surprise opportunities to travel might occur. Someone powerful will probably impress you.

CANCER (June 21-July 22)

This is a restless day for you. You might want to stock the fridge because something unexpected could impact your home scene. Surprise company might drop by. You might hear from family. An unexpected but powerful discussion about shared resources might take place.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22)

Stay on your toes because unexpected events will bring you in touch with others — friends, members of groups, siblings and relatives. You might meet someone unusual. Or someone you already know might surprise you. You might also have a powerful exchange with someone — perhaps a partner.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)

Something unusual might occur that affects your job or work. It might be surprising news from a boss. Alternatively, something unexpected might affect your health or even your pet. It might relate to news from a parent, boss or an authority figure.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)

This is a fabulous day to schmooze. You feel friendly, sociable and eager to meet others. Unexpected opportunities to travel might put you in touch with someone new and exciting. Romance can blossom. All kinds of opportunities are potentially possible. Stay flexible.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)

Stay in touch with your bank account and anything to do with shared property and the resources of others because a pleasant surprise might occur. The day is full of all kinds of possibilities but most of them are favourable. For example, a hidden romance might begin.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)

You might be happy to meet someone new who is unusual. Something to do with your social contacts with friends and groups will surprise you. Many people will encounter an unexpected flirtation or romance. Stay alert.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)

The day is full of surprises, and for your sign, these surprises could impact your job, finances and reputation. In all likelihood, whatever happens will be favourable. It might be minor — it could be major. Keep your eyes open. If you’re asked to take on new responsibilities, say yes.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)

A surprise opportunity to travel or explore avenues in publishing, the media, medicine and the law might drop into your lap. Alternatively, you might receive an exciting invitation. Keep an open mind because the day is full of fun-loving detours.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20)

Your home routine might change. Small appliances could break down or a minor outage could occur. Stock the fridge because surprise company might drop by. This is the kind of day where detours and surprises catch people off guard, but for the most part, the outcome is fun and pleasurable.

Local medical scrubs retailer feeling abandoned by U of M, RRC Polytech nursing programs

A Winnipeg uniform store is appealing to medical students to shop locally for scrubs this back-to-school season as it grapples with growing competition online and an apparent shutout by local campuses.

Unimor Healthwear has long ordered uniforms in bulk in navy blue, burgundy and pewter, as nurses-in-training are required to wear those colours based on where they’re enrolled in the province.

“It’s not like it used to be,” Evan Schwartz said about customer traffic to his store at 98 Sherbrook St.

The company’s director estimated he spent about $15,000 to stock up on scrubs in pewter in preparation for the launch of Red River College Polytechnic’s upcoming nursing intake.

Can federal legislation effectively rein in social media’s opaque algorithms and deceptive design features?

Marsha McLeod 12 minute read 1:44 PM CDT

In June, when Ottawa introduced Bill C-34, the Safe Social Media Act, one element — plans to block children under the age of 16 from certain social media platforms — dominated headlines and fuelled debates.

But this marks just one component of a complex, 92-page bill that would enact two separate pieces of legislation: the Digital Safety Act and the Digital Safety Commission of Canada Act.

The Free Press took a close look at the tabled bill, breaking down the changes it would make, if passed.

Heritage Minister Marc Miller, whose department is responsible for the file, told reporters in June the bill meant to ramp up Canada’s oversight of Big Tech.

Walk on Portage Avenue reveals difficult present, some cause for optimism

Dan Lett 5 minute read Updated: Yesterday at 3:23 PM CDT

On a recent visit back to Winnipeg, I got to witness the multitudes of Portage Avenue.

From my Airbnb on Hargrave Street, I had the opportunity to do quite a bit of walking on Portage Avenue, from Portage and Memorial all the way down to the recently opened intersection at Portage and Main.

Along the way, I saw it all: huge and dynamic construction projects, persistent urban decay and the occasional oasis of revitalization.

All in the space of 10 blocks.

Mayoral race lineup grows to 10 candidates

Joyanne Pursaga 2 minute read Yesterday at 1:50 PM CDT

An electrical contractor has become the 10th candidate to register for the race to become Winnipeg’s next mayor.

Zac Uminski has thrown his name into the competition, after Scott Gillingham signed up to seek re-election as mayor and eight other candidates previously registered.

The father of four said concern about homelessness and addictions sparked his interest in politics.

“My campaign will focus on practical solutions to improve public safety, support families and strengthen the city services,” Uminski said. “We need safer communities.”

New sci-fi/fantasy bookstore a welcome addition

Ben Sigurdson 5 minute read Yesterday at 4:46 PM CDT

A new chapter has begun in Winnipeg’s literary landscape with the opening of science fiction and fantasy bookstore Other Places Books.

Located at 436 Graham Ave., the queer-owned and operated shop is the latest in a host of genre bookstores to have opened in the city over the last few years. In addition to longtime mainstay Whodunit? Mystery Bookstore (163 Lilac St.), the local scene now also features a horror bookstore (Raven’s End Books, which opened at 1859 Portage Ave. in 2024) and a shop focused on romance (Bound to Please, which opened at 995 McPhillips St. earlier this year).

The 900 titles currently in stock at Other Places, which opened Tuesday, span a range of sci-fi and fantasy sub-genres, with a particular focus on queer writers and storylines. The bookstore is the brainchild of Didi Chanoch, who moved to Winnipeg from Israel in 2025 after the Canadian federal government began offering work permits to those in Israel and Palestine looking to leave the area due to the conflict.

Winnipeg ended up on Chanoch’s radar in large part due to a more reasonable cost of living than other Canadian cities.
