MOON ALERT: Avoid shopping (except food and gas) and important decisions after 2 p.m. The moon is in Aries.

ARIES (March 21-April 19)

This is a powerful day for you because the moon is in your sign, and there is a lovely trine between Jupiter and Saturn happening. This will encourage you to make plans — cautiously. You’re ready to roll up your sleeves and get to work.

The Other Bennet Sister star Donal Finn is 31 today.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20)

This day is a mixture of work and play for you. Opportunities to enjoy sporting events, fun times with children, the arts, theatre and the entertainment world are at hand. However, you might see ways to secure something related to home and family.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20)

Even though your strong focus now is on home, family and perhaps renovations, Venus wants you to play. In addition to this, it’s a good day to think about long-range goals, especially in practical terms. Be aware of the moon alert and just jot down your ideas for future reference.

CANCER (June 21-July 22)

You have lots of energy this week with fiery Mars in your sign. In addition to which, both the sun and Mercury will keep you busy with short trips, appointments, errands and chatting with everyone. You’ll enjoy entertaining at home as well. It’s a good day for solid financial plans.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22)

Money, cash flow and earnings have been on your mind. However, Jupiter in your sign is dancing favourably with Saturn (for the first time since 2014). Trust your ability to make plans about travel, publishing, medicine, the law and higher education. Tentative, yes, but a beginning.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)

The sun and Mercury are in your sign, which makes you chatty and eager to talk to others. You might want to buy beautiful things, if so, check the restrictions of the moon alert. (See above). Take a moment to do some serious thinking about shared property and your debt.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)

If you’re involved with a friend, group or organization, you might help others to make a mission statement or come up with a group goal. This is an excellent day to explore this — but don’t settle on anything. Don’t agree, just yet.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)

You might make some plans about your future, especially regarding your job, career or your name in the community. Nevertheless, commit to nothing. (See what happens after tomorrow.)

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)

You make an excellent impression on others now, which is why it’s a great time to talk to bosses, parents and VIPs. You might discuss travel plans and issues related to children, the arts and social outings. Wait until later in the week to agree to anything.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)

Family discussions might produce profitable suggestions for home and family or to deal with shared property. Nevertheless, don’t agree to anything because things might change, especially after tomorrow. Just put ideas in your databank for now.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)

A discussion with a partner, spouse or close friend will be enthusiastic, practical and productive. You might even want to jump on the bandwagon to get things rolling, but don’t be too eager. Tomorrow will have some obstacles. Wait to see how things pan out.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20)

You have growing optimism about your job and ability to earn money. You might listen to the advice of someone who is enthusiastic and encouraging. Nevertheless, get your data but wait until later in the week to act, because tomorrow could be a game changer.

TODAY’S BIRTHDAY

Actor Donal Finn (1995) shares your birthday. You’re charismatic, focused and motivated. You’re also charming, efficient and committed to your goals. This is a year of work and construction. Create foundations in your life both externally and internally. Simplicity is key. Take charge of your health, perhaps through martial arts or yoga. Stay grounded and levelheaded.

History not meant to be nice and comforting

Allan Levine 5 minute read 2:01 AM CDT

History is messy. On one hand, it offers uplifting stories of success, courage, human achievement, invention, ingenuity, compassion and kindness. Think of Dr. Jonas Salk and his development of the first successful polio vaccine. Or Viola Desmond, who asserted her civil rights against racial segregation in Nova Scotia.

On the other hand, history is also dark, ugly, mean-spirited and a catalogue of hardships, tragedy and brutality. Consider slavery, the Holocaust, the First and Second World Wars and residential schools — to list only a very few examples of the bloodshed, cruelty, death and depravity that has frequently defined history.

Anyone who has extensively studied history or read a history book knows that the past is complex and rarely black and white; that men and women, whether they are politicians, activists, businessmen, journalists, lawyers and judges, have their good and bad sides. Human perfection is elusive and there are few saints.

Most of us understand this except, it seems, U.S. President Donald Trump and his White House officials. They don’t like presentations of U.S. history, for example, that highlight slavery and the slaughter of Indigenous peoples, key elements of the American past for hundreds of years.

At the city’s busiest fire and paramedic hall, first responders face a relentless workload

Scott Billeck 24 minute read Friday, Aug. 28, 2026

As a soft rain begins to fall between the concrete walls of “Hope Alley,” little feels further away than the place’s namesake.

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service crews have been called to the narrow downtown passage, named by Al Wiebe, a formerly homeless man turned advocate. People regularly pass through here, moving between the shelters, drop-ins and resource centres clustered around Main Street between Logan and Higgins avenues.

Against a wall, as the sky switches into night mode, a man sits bleeding from his nose, seemingly unaware of how he ended up with blood running down his T-shirt.

His situation has already set Winnipeg’s emergency response network in motion.

Carney’s defence of Lake Ontario carries enormous weight

Niigaan Sinclair 5 minute read Friday, Aug. 28, 2026

For centuries on Turtle Island (North America), explorers, map makers, and political leaders have erased Indigenous place names and substituted them — more often than not — with political, ethnocentric, and self-aggrandizing names.

In recent years, a few places on the continent have had Indigenous names re-established, but as of today, few of the original names are “official.”

So, it was no surprise when U.S. President Donald Trump on Thursday signed an executive order directing the U.S. Department of the Interior and Board on Geographic Names to take steps within 30 days to officially rename Lake Ontario as “Lake America.”

The move may have been a result of the Canada-U.S. trade war and Trump’s pettiness and ego, but it also fits in perfectly with his career.

Letters, Aug. 31

7 minute read 2:01 AM CDT

A trade and tariff take

My take on the Canada/U.S. trade negotiation breakdown is that the Americans simply overplayed their hand. They added last-minute items and wording in an effort to jam us into a one-sided deal, expecting we would avert new tariffs at any price.

Now we see the U.S. Trade Representative, (Jamieson) Greer, pleading it was Canada that came forth with new requests. It is hard to believe, given (the Trump administration’s) propensity to stretch the truth and outright lie.

Trump needs a win on a trade deal with Canada more than we do, given U.S. mid-term elections are coming up in a couple of months. Inflation in the U.S. is already higher due to increased oil prices from Trump’s war on Iran and his tariffs create additional upward price pressures.

Oddities market fills the gap in macabre curiosities

Chris Kitching 4 minute read Yesterday at 4:50 PM CDT

The dolls Katherine Blahut designs are the ones from your childhood — with a macabre twist.

There’s the Nosferatu-inspired “NosferaTOT,” complete with fangs, pointed ears and another doll’s severed leg, and “ScAriel,” a demonic, Disney-inspired mermaid more interested in taking human souls than gaining one.

“I get a lot of questions like, ‘Are they haunted?’” Blahut said Sunday at An Oddly Curious Market in Winnipeg, where she was one of 45 vendors.

The sight of sinister-looking baby dolls brought some marketgoers to a dead halt at Blahut’s table. Some were curious or commented on how impressed they were by her work. Some visitors appeared a tad uncomfortable.
