MOON ALERT: Caution! Avoid shopping (except food and gas) and important decisions until after 6:30 p.m. today. After that, the moon moves from Cancer into Leo.

ARIES (March 21-April 19)

Don’t expect much co-operation from partners, spouses and close friends. This is why you might feel cut off from others or a bit lonely. There’s the sense a gulf exists between you and everyone else. But this is temporary. Courage!

TAURUS (April 20-May 20)

If you’re working or dealing with health issues or your pet, you might encounter obstacles. Co-operation might not be forthcoming. If this is the case, it’s par for the course. Relax. Don’t make a big deal about things. Act later in the week.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20)

This is a tough day for social situations, especially romantic outings or connections with intimate partners. This includes sporting events and dealing with kids as well. Your best bet is to go along to get along and make as few waves as possible.

CANCER (June 21-July 22)

Your confidence might be low because you feel overwhelmed by authority figures in your family and private world. Fortunately, the moon is in your sign giving you a slight advantage. Furthermore, social outings will please you.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22)

It might seem whatever you try to do meets with obstacles or objections from someone. (Is there no justice?) Keep your wits about you and pay attention while driving, jogging, walking and talking to others.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)

Financial issues might be stressful. Whatever it is you’re trying to do, whether it’s earning money or spending it, it seems something will trip you up or make things more difficult. Maybe it’s time to take a moment and think about balancing your needs and obligations?

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)

It’s important to get along with others because you value partnerships and close relationships. This is why the day is challenging. No matter what you do, you might feel cut off from someone or misunderstood. Things will be better next week. Relax.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)

It’s a good thing fair Venus is in your sign smoothing your communication style and making it easier for you to be patient, because issues related to your job, health or a pet are tough! It’s as if others are trying to test your patience. Easy does it.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)

Go gently, because relations with friends, groups and even your kids are challenging. Take a step back and give the situation some breathing room. Don’t force your ideas on anyone. Listen to what they say and have faith things will be resolved in the coming week.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)

This not the day to question parents, bosses, teachers, VIPs or the police. In fact, you might want to give authority figures a wide berth to avoid conflict or confrontations. Obviously, this is not the day to ask for permission or approval. It is what it is.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)

You will need all your diplomatic skills to avoid arguments with siblings, relatives and neighbours, because people are opinionated. Not only might someone disagree with you, they might want to block what it is you want to do. (No fair!)

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20)

This is a poor day to reach a consensus about financial matters because people refuse to agree to anything. In fact, they’ll be quick to tell you why you can’t do something. Fortunately, your ability to work hard will stand you in good stead.

TODAY’S BIRTHDAY

Actor Susan Sarandon (1946) shares your birthday. You’re gregarious and at ease with yourself. You’re levelheaded, relaxed and ambitious. This is a year of service for you, perhaps to family. Take care of yourself so you can be a resource for those who turn to you for comfort, guidance and courage. Time for a makeover?

The heroic true tale of Norway House Cree Nation-born Jordan River Anderson came home Friday night, as Manitoba Theatre for Young People presented Yvette Nolan’s Jordan.

The touring production, a collaboration with Geordie Theatre, runs weekends through Oct. 11, with additional stops in Toronto, Vancouver and Ottawa’s National Arts Centre.

Having several of Anderson’s family members witness the local première underscored the evening with poignancy. Elder and Pine Creek First Nation member Barbara Nepinak added her own dignified presence and prayers following MTYP artistic director Pablo Felices-Luna’s welcoming remarks.

The season-opener also marks the Winnipeg-raised playwright’s homecoming; the Algonquin playwright, director, dramaturg, actor and educator was a fixture in our local theatre community for many years before going on to serve as artistic director for Native Earth Performing Arts from 2003 to ‘11, among other contributions.

A day on the campaign trail: Winnipeg's mayor, seeking a second term, does double duty

Malak Abas 12 minute read Friday, Oct. 2, 2026

In the weeks leading up to the civic election, Scott Gillingham has been performing a juggling act: he’s running to be Winnipeg’s 45th mayor, while still serving as its 44th.

“If someone asks me about the campaign, I’m going to answer them. But I think for most people, I’m the mayor of Winnipeg, even if I’m showing up as a candidate,” Gillingham, 58, says. “I try to do all I can to maintain that distinction.”

The Free Press joined Gillingham on a recent rainy September Saturday on the campaign trail, where he served in both roles during an event-laden day. City council’s final meeting before the Oct. 28 election was days earlier.

In Winnipeg, it’s rare for an incumbent to be defeated. But Gillingham knows his win in 2022 wasn’t exactly a landslide — he won with 27.5 per cent of the vote — and he’s been thinking about his second term ever since.

Volunteer pop-up library axed from Manitoba Youth Centre

Matthew Frank 4 minute read Updated: Yesterday at 11:25 AM CDT

Manitoba Corrections has cancelled a pop-up library program at the Manitoba Youth Centre, leaving inmates without librarian services and fewer options to borrow certain books.

The Prison Libraries Committee, part of the non-profit Manitoba Library Association, operated and funded the volunteer program since 2024 before it was shut down by the province last month. The group previously partnered with the province to offer the service because the facility has no dedicated library of its own.

“It is concerning that community members who are incarcerated, especially youth, are losing out on meaningful programming, access to information and rehabilitation efforts, which are offered at no cost to (Manitoba) Corrections. We urge Manitoba Justice to promote more library services and programming, not less,” said a Sept. 24 letter from the non-profit addressed to the justice minister.

Ashley Huot, chair of the Prison Libraries Committee, said she was puzzled when she received an email last month from Manitoba Corrections stating that the pop-up library was no longer needed.

Morning-show veteran swaps microphone for macchiatos at new Corydon café

David Sanderson 9 minute read Yesterday at 2:00 AM CDT

Good news if you were used to having your morning coffee with Terri Gale, who earlier this summer signed off from CTV Your Morning, after 15 years on the job.

Gale, the three-hour program’s longtime weather expert, and her husband Rob Gale, the ex-head soccer coach of Valour FC and co-founder of the Northern Super League’s new Winnipeg franchise, are the owners of Golden Hour Café and Bar at 775 Corydon Ave.

Gale (formerly Apostle) nods when she is asked who would know more about caffeinated beverages than a person who, for the last decade and a half, set her alarm to go off in the wee small hours.

“I do love coffee and take mine black. Except because I hate burning my tongue — not a good thing when you speak for a living — I got into the habit of throwing a couple of ice cubes in my cup, to be on the safe side,” Gale says, seated on the second level of their attractive, 2,100-square-foot premises, which officially opened in mid-September.

A morning in the life …

My very first lesson does not start when I walk into that lecture hall, oh no — it starts long before. It begins when I walk to my car, check the estimated arrival time to the University of Manitoba and hope that Winnipeg traffic agrees with it.

A drive that appears completely manageable changes almost immediately when I’m greeted by a tsunami of orange pylons and a line of cars that appears to go on forever. Traffic moves by the inch, lanes magically disappear and the detour I took yesterday now has a detour of its own. These factors make me do a calculation that I have become all too familiar with. How late can I arrive and still find parking, run to my class across campus and get to class with enough time left to make it worth it?

I have grown used to people saying, “Why not just leave earlier?” I do. But when I’m already leaving for my 8:30 a.m. class at 7 a.m., there’s only so much I can do. This drive that some would think is relaxing is one that feels like an assignment that I didn’t know I had to complete and is due at 8:30 a.m.
