Dear Mrs. Thompson: I am 19 and have been going with a girl one year younger for the past year and a half. However, I am out of town quite often for months at a time, and on returning, quite naturally wish to give her something. I am completely lost about knowing what to get for her. Please give me your suggestions.

— R.M.

Answer: You should not give the girl lingerie, jewelry, anything personal or anything expensive, but with these exceptions, your choice is limited only by your knowledge of her tastes.

The old rule was nothing except flowers, candy, books or music when a couple were not engaged, and it is still a safe guide. All girls love to receive flowers and your friend would be thrilled if you sometimes brought her a bouquet. If she has a sweet tooth like most young girls, she would appreciate an enormous box of chocolates. If she likes reading, she would be pleased with a new book or an old one by a favourite author. If she plays the piano or sings, she would be glad to receive several song hits.

Interest in sports or hobbies increases the possibilities — golf or tennis balls, badminton equipment, gadgets for the camera fiend, pictures for the person interested in art, decks of cards or new games for one who entertains a lot, and so on.

If you choose something that is exactly right for your friend, and not just a “suitable gift from boy to girl,” she will be flattered by your understanding.
