For many years the Free Press has closed each December with a quiz testing our readers’ knowlege of the news events of the previous twelve months.

This year we’re going a different direction, introducing a crossword with the elements of a year-end news quiz (plus other Winnipeg references).

All names used in the puzzle are surnames, unless otherwise specified.

Once the crossword is completed, unscramble the circled letters for a two-word message from the Winnipeg Free Press.

If you’re new to our online crossword (you can do one daily in our puzzles section), a few tips:

  • Click on any box to open the clue, or click on the clue to highlight the boxes in the puzzle.
  • If you prefer to do the puzzle on paper, click the printer icon at the top of the puzzle.
  • If you need a hint, click on the lightbulb icon at the top of the puzzle. “Show a hint” will give you a link to a news story or website that includes the answer. You can also choose to reveal a letter, a word or the entire grid.
  • If you want to check your work, click on the icon at the top of the puzzle that looks like a paper with a checkmark. Select to check either the current letter, word or grid.

Readers who successfully unscrambled the circled letters in the puzzle to see the two-word message from the Free Press, were invited to enter a contest that closed at 11:59 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 1.

The correct answer to the word scramble is: JOURNALISM MATTERS.

We received more than 300 correct entries. We have randomly selected one of the correct responses to receive a pair of tickets to watch the Winnipeg Jets play the Anaheim Ducks on Sunday, Jan. 13 in the Free Press private suite. We contacted the winner directly. (See contest fine print.)

Methinks Hydro CEO Allan Danroth protests too much.

At a recent hearing in front of the Public Utilities Board, Danroth suggested Hydro’s plan to build a $3-billion natural-gas-powered generating plant near Brandon was being subjected to unfair criticism. The gas turbines are meant to bolster Hydro’s grid in the event that drought lowers output from hydro-generating stations.

After hearing submissions from interveners concerned about the gas-turbine plan, Danroth lashed out at the “constant, uninformed criticism” that has not only shaken trust in Hydro but also triggered threatening responses from the public.

Danroth said Hydro is monitoring “eight credible threats” against employees, five of which targeted the CEO himself. Although Danroth cited some specific incidents — employees being threatened with guns, and one where a homeowner set his dogs on a meter reader — he refused to elaborate on the circumstances.

A man was stabbed while waiting for a bus near The Forks Saturday in a random act of violence, Winnipeg police say.

An unknown man "appeared unexpectedly" while the victim, in his 20s, was standing at a bus stop in the first block of Israel Asper Way just after 6:30 p.m. Aug. 1 and stabbed him, the Winnipeg Police Service stated in a news release Sunday.

Police officers provided emergency medical care before the victim was taken to hospital in stable condition.

Police located a suspect shortly afterward along Forks Market Road and the Major Crimes Unit took over the investigation.

The couple’s journey to Canada started in Eritrea, where they grew up and attended the same church together. They left Eritrea separately, hoping to build a better life together out of the country. Ghebru travelled through Sudan and Libya before reaching Malta, while Awate travelled to Sudan and then Uganda.

After he found work in Malta, he tried to have his family join him, but government policies prevented them from reuniting. The couple married in Uganda in 2016, and their first daughter, Peniel, was born there the following year.
