But thanks to his time in the classroom, he’s developed the patience that’s required by a young American trying to make a name for oneself in the three-down loop.

Vanterpool got into teaching after failing to make the New England Patriots in 2023. He said goodbye to the education profession the following year and took his talents up north to Winnipeg.

Granite housing project passes final council hurdle after appeal rejected

Critics of the proposed 12-storey housing project set for the parking lot of the Granite Curling Club were shut down at a city meeting Thursday as councillors allowed the development to proceed.

The 110-unit building at 30 Granite Way originally meant the loss of 45 of the 80 parking spots, which the long-running club said would ruin its financial viability.

In June, the city produced a plan to add parking spots around the club by removing a boulevard and adjusting spots at another parking lot, but the club’s management called the plan inadequate.

City council’s property and development committee discussed a number of proposed variances to the building plan Thursday, including allowing the building height to reach 126 feet even though regulations stipulate a maximum 100 feet, and shifts in the width of some parking spots allotted to the residential building and the curling club. Appeals against those changes, including those by management at the Granite Curling Club, were unanimously denied by the committee.

Downtown Winnipeg comedy club Yuk Yuk’s closes

A downtown Winnipeg comedy club, Yuk Yuk’s, closed after being one of the company’s worst performing locations across Canada.

“We’ve opened many clubs,” said Mark Breslin, Yuk Yuk’s founder. “They’re like oil wells — some of them gush, some of them trickle and some of them are just dry.

“You never absolutely know which is going to be which.”

The franchise counts at least 10 locations nationally.

Rested Sea Bears ready for post-season press

Isiah Osborne acknowledged that the effort — and the results — have been disappointing at times recently.

He also knows it’s not too late to change that.

The Winnipeg Sea Bears were afforded some time this week to reflect on the recent shortcomings as a group. With six days separating the last game and the next game, members of the club took a couple of days away from basketball before returning to the court for their last full week of practice, which was appreciated for a tired group that finished its busiest stretch of the Canadian Elite Basketball League campaign last weekend.

“We think we’re the best team in the league, obviously,” said Osborne. “A couple bad games, but that’s just off some mistakes. On some plays, if we’re not on that 100 per cent effort, little things happen, and we’ve lost a couple games by two, by four, and that happens. Just a couple mishaps on defence, stuff like that, and I mean, you just gotta lock in on those.”
